| Note* | John or John Anthony Cook, Rachel, R2272, PA Line, soldier was born and raised in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Soldier married Mrs. Rachel Brison on 11 February 1806, both were of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Soldier died 11 Aug 1822. Widow applied 9 Dec 1854 in Morrow County, Ohio. In 1854 soldiers sons William P & Henry Cook were living in 1854 & Henry was of Van Wert county, Ohio. (Source: DAR pension record book.) I (David O. Dakan) feel Henry is in fact one and the same as one of his brothers, since his father's will (which we have a copy of) did not mention Henry, but did mention all of John Cook's children. Hence the assumption that Henry is either a common name or the middle name of one of the other brothers. |

(Source: DAR pension record book.) ******************************************************************************* Letter from Lawrence Sprankle, First Baptist Church, 51 W. High, Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Dated 13 April 1955: Dear Mrs. Hendric: I report to you on your letter of request of a few days ago. I have found the cemetery at the Owl Creek Primitive Baptist Church, some 15 miles from Mt. Gilead and 2 1/2 miles from the hamlet of Waterford (Fredericktown RFD 3). I have found the tombstone and taken some ten or more pictures for you of the stone, the church, the cemetery, the farm etc. Having enjoyed searching out old pioneer farms and roads, I saw at some distance a place I thought would be the likely location of a pioneer home. It is now a thicket; I walked into it and my hopes seem true. There are the old stones of a log building or barn. The ground is depressed, flags (flowers that adorned the front yard of old homes) squared off around the impression in the ground and facing what appears the contour of a pioneer road on west side of the house. Road now runs on east side on Knox County line and goes north as did the old road bed. Mr. Wyker (Blair, first name) RFD 3, Fredericktown, now lives on the present farm that surround the church and cemetery. Mr Wyker is about 70 years of age. His father, he claims, bought the farm from Rev. John Cook, whom he claims bought the farm, thinking a spring of water was located upon it, and finding it not, later sold to Mr. Wyker's father. This Rev. Cook I have heard about from others which seems to be of a later day. This would have to be true for two generations could not reach back 133 years when your great grand-father died in 1822. I hope to gather further information from Morrow County History. Here is the inscription on Rev. John Cook's tombstone: "In memory of Rev. John Cook who departed this life August 11, A.D. 1822, age 64 yr. 4 mo., 30 days. "Hear what the voice of Heaven proclaims For all the pious dead Sweet is the Savior of their names And soft their sleeping bed Far from this world of toil and strife They're present with the Lord. (the last two lines are no longer readable. The stone appears in good condition other than at the bottom. The large tree has protected it, no doubt.) I shall try to get access to the old church books if the church has the original books. I could check the deed in the court house too, if you should wish additional information. (Signed Lawrence Sprankle) Following is a letter from State of New Jersey, Department of Defense, dated 4 Nov 1955. It is certified that the records of this office show that John Cook - Monmouth County - served as Private, Captain John Schenck's Company, First Regiment, Monmouth County Militia; member of detachment of Monmouth County Militia, which under command of Colonel Asher Holmes, captured the British Brig "Britannia" off Shoal Harbor on the New Jersey Coast, December 30, 1779 - during the Revolutionary War. Following is a letter from Lawrence Sprankle, First Baptist Church. JOHN COOK In the fall of 1810, John Cook started from his home in Maryland in search of a better land and a newer community, where he might turn his limited capital to a larger account. He was a native of New Jersey, but had emigrated in 1794 to Maryland. The formation of Ohio had opened up a vast amount of land to the enterprising pioneer. It was this condition of affairs that induced John Cook, John Ackerman and William Levering to mount their horses in the fall of 1810, and start to investigate the new country. Mr. Cook had commissioned his son to look after the boundaries of his land, and to see that it was located as he supposed it to be, and found that it was not-- that the supposed spring and grove which would have added so much to his purchase were not on his land. When this was reported to Mr. Cook he secured another half section, taking in the desired property. With his effects and family stowed in one of those Pennsylvania wagons known by the expressive name of land-schooners, with a team of five horses as the motor power, he started for the "far west". The route took them along the Hagerstown pike, which had been partially completed, for about forty miles. From this point, they followed a plainly marked road, along which there was considerable travel. They could make slow progress at best, and four weeks had passed before they reached their journey's end. On their way they met with persons leaving their frontier homes, and giving the most discouraging reports of matters on the border. At Cambridge, Ohio, they met one of the soldiers who had been wounded at the Copus affair at Mansfield, who almost discouraged Mr. Cook from proceeding farther; but he was a "plucky" sort of man and was determined that nothing short of actual danger should impede his progress. On reaching Mount Vernon he found that his former neighbors who had settled near the farm to which he was going, had fled to Mount Vernon and Fredericktown for protection from the Indians, who it feared were about to make a descent upon the unprotected settlements in that region. Mr. Cook came as far as Middlebury, where he took possession of an empty cabin belonging to an old surveyor by the name of Mitchell, which he occupied until he got a cabin of his own erected. When built, his cabin was a structure eighteen by twenty feet, staked and ridered, a chimney constructed of cat and clay and constrained one room and a loft. Meanwhile his first cabin had proved a rather uncomfortable home even for a pioneer family, and Mr. Cook employed some persons who carried on a rude carpentry, to erect a two storied, hewed log house, eighteen by twenty-six feet. This building was provided with a brick chimney and a shingled roof, and was considered as quite an aristocratic residence for that time. (He worked the farm during the day and preached the Word at night.) |

| Note* | Birth date used came from Family Tree done by Maude Hendrie (Dakan) who is Riley Dakan's daughter for DAR. From the obituary or funeral folder for Rachel, via Maxine Workman. "Died at her home, two miles and a half northeast of Savannah, Mo., at 1:15 A.M., Saturday, October 6, 1906, Rachel Dakan, aged 89 years, 2 months and 6 days. The funeral will be conducted from the First Baptist church in Savannah at 1:30 P.M., Sunday October 7. Interment in Savannah cemetery." Other material indicates she died October 4, 1906. I have used October 4 since it would be very unusual for her funeral to be the next day as the funeral notice has it. Material from Letha Marie Shull Mowry indicates her date of death as 1 Sep 1869 in Ohio. This is quite different from the date I (David O. Dakan) have of 4 Oct 1906. The 1869 date must be in error, as I have a copy of her funeral notice which shows her date of death as 4 Oct 1906. |

Stephen was born 11 February 1811 in Washington County, Maryland, Son of John and Rachel Bryson Cook. His parents came here (Note from David O. : Maybe Morrison County, Ohio) when Stephen was about 18 mo. old. (Which would have been 1813.)" Above which came to me (David O.
