| Note* | Source for name is Donald C. Dakan, Family Group Sheet for John Martin Dakan. "History of West Virginia", American History Society, 1921, Vol III, pg. 32. From "Amos Terrill History" as published by the Marshall County WV Historical Society. This came to me from the Internet as a document which was posted to a news group. Subject: Re: Terrill/ Turrill/Tyrell. The document is filed under 929.4. "e: Amos Terrill and Matilda Lewis. Matilda's parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Lewis, born in 1803. Her descendants were the prominent Braddock Family of Pennsylvania. Amos was the son of Daniel and Sarah Prindle Terrill, and came to Marshall County from Waterbury Conn., when he was a small boy. He had two brothers and two sisters. Lucy Ann Terrill was married to John Haris, Damarius married Jacob Crow, Amasa never married and Sherman married Amanda Potter and moved to Illinois Amos with his brothers and sisters helped their father make bricks and build a brick home on Terrill Ridge in 1815, which is still standing, has been remodeled and now has brick veneer on it. This farm is in the middle of 1000 acres, which Amos's Grandfather Jared received as a revolutionary War grant. Amos with his father and brothers and sisters established the first Universalist Church which was then Fork Ridge, Ohio County, Virginia. Amos and Matilda had eleven children: Lewis married Millie Terrill, they had 10 children. William married twice and had 4 children. George married Katherine Ogle and had 1 daughter. Sarah married John Smar and had 2 daughters. Elizna married George Harris and had 6 children. Elizabeth married David Fleming Lowe and had 9 children. Evaline married Joseph Louden/Loudenslager and moved to Tiffin, Ohio. Angeline married John Gosney and had 2 children. Daniel married Mary Cunningham and had 2 children. Eliza married John Dakan and had 11 children. Thomas S. married Agnes Harris and had 7 children Amos and Matilda are buried at Universalist church cemetery. Jared Terrill came to this area from Waterbury Conn., in the late 1790's. Jared built a log cabin on Middle Grave Creek and divided the 1000 acre grant amongst his children. Most of them there is no record of except in the will. Jared and his wife Sarah are buried in a small family cemetery above the cabin on Middle Grave Creek. Daniel and his wife Sarah are buried on the knoll at the farm on Terrill Ridge where they built the brick home. Daniel served as a captain of Militia during the war of 1812. He also was the first minister of the First Universalist Church on Fork Ridge. One of his grandsons Amos Lowe, later became a minister there. " According to "The History of West Virginia, Old and New", Published 1923, The American Historical Society Inc, Chicago and New York, Volume III, page 32-33. Amos Terrell was an influential citizen of Pleasant Valley, Marshall County, West Virginia. |
