Allen ('Bud') Porter Killed on the Tracks Between Hamilton and Elvaston, Friday Evening. Allen Porter, commonly called 'Bud' Porter, formerly a member of the Wabash section crew at this place, was killed on the tracks two miles east of Hamilton Friday night. While the real story of the man's death will always be shrouded in mystery, the evidence in the case is as follows: Porter had been in Keokuk and Friday evening, he attempted to board the Wabash passenger at Keokuk for Carthage, but was prevented by the conductor, because of Porter's irresponsible condition. In the pocket of Porter's clothing was found an interurban transfer from Keokuk up to the town of Hamilton. So he evidently crossed the bridge on the trolly. The engineer of a T. P. & W. freight stated that as his train was within a mile of Hamilton, about 7 o'clock Friday evening, he saw a man walking unsteadily up the track, but he left the track for the train to pass. As the man answered the description of Porter, it was evident he had started to walk home. It is further evident that about a mile further, he fell asleep on the track. Every evidence showed he was struck by a west bound train. The west bound Wabash passenger left Elvaston at 9:07 and Porter's watch was stopped at 9:15, giving eight minutes for the train to travel the four miles where the remains were found. The remains were noticed next morning by a freight crew on the T. P. & W. This crew left word for the section men at Elvaston that something had been killed on the track, either a man or an animal, and Thos. Garvey and his crew went to the scene of the accident. They found the body of the man strewn along the track for 300 feet, dismembered and already in a state of decomposition. The local Wabash freight brought the remains to Elvaston and the coroner was notified. Coroner Barr was called to Elvaston and after viewing the remains and taking testimony, issued orders to Undertaker Hearne, to bury the body. It was placed in a casket, the Elvaston authorities gave a place in the Elvaston cemetery for the interment, and the remains were duly interred, decently and in order. Rev. Roy Enslow conducted the services at the grave. Immediately upon Mr. Hearne's return to Carthage, he learned that Mr. Porter's family had identified the watch, hat and shoes of the deceased, which had been brought to Carthage by Dr. Barr, immediately after the inquest. The family instructed Mr. Hearne to remove the body from Elvaston to the family lot at Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Hearne telephoned the authorities at Elvaston and they had the grave opened and the casket ready for Mr. Hearne when he reached there late that night. The body was brought to the undertaking rooms here and held until Monday morning, when accompanied by the family, it was conveyed to Oak Grove cemetery where the interment service was read by Dr. M. L. O'Harra. Deceased was the oldest son of John and Mary Porter and was born at Oak Grove. He was twice married, first to Lena Lane, to which union were born three children, Florence, Marion and Clarance. His wife dying, he was later married to Minnie Hasky, who with five children, Hazel (Mrs. Sherman Smith), Bertha, Chellis, Bulah and Eva survive. He is also survived by his brothers, Elmer, John, and Stanley, and sister, Mrs. Cox. He was a member of the Christian church, which he joined a number of years ago. He was also a member of the Woodman lodge in which order he carried $1000 insurance. He was a quiet industrious man and his family have the sympathy of all in this shocking bereavement that has befallen them.23 |

| Note* | http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bryant/obits/Porter_Clarence_W.ht ml The Carthage Republican/ Carthage, Illinois/ Wednesday/ May 1, 1940 Page 2 Column 2 World War Veteran Dies Following Stroke, Tuesday, April 23 Clarence W. Porter, a disabled World War veteran passed away at the home of his brother Marion, near Fountain Green, Tuesday evening following a paralytic stroke of a week earlier. Clarence was the youngest of three children born to Allen A. and Olena (Lane) Porter. He was born December 6, 1886 on a farm near Middle Creek in Carthage township, and passed away April 23, 1940 at the age of 53 years, 4 months, and 17 days. When Clarence was only four years old his mother died and he went to live with his grandmother. He spent practically his entire young manhood in the Oak Grove and Middle Creek communities. He was large and was one of the strongest men in his community and was considered a very good farmer. When just a lad Clarence joined the church at Oak Grove and was baptized there and always remained a believer in the Christian faith. On April 3rd, 1918 Clarence enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to Ft. Rosecrans where he was given five months training and sent overseas where he spent the next six months with the American Expeditionary Forces. He was discharged with honors from the Army on March 10, 1919. His discharge papers show that his character as a soldier was good and that he was especially mentioned as being honest and faithful. Following Clarence's return from the World War he began to decline in health. At two different times he was a patient at Hines hospital, near Chicago, where he was treated for both eye and throat trouble. For two years he was a resident of the Soldiers Home at Quincy where his eyes were treated. Even though his eye sight was practically gone Clarence remained ambitious and was a capable hand with livestock until his final illness. For the last two years Clarence has made his home with his brother Marion where he was happy and devoted to his niece. The three made a very congenial little family and Clarence's death is deeply mourned by both the brother and niece as well as by a sister, Mrs. Florence Hale and family of Carthage and three half sisters and a half brother who live in more distant places. Clarence never married and was always much devoted to his brother and sister and their families. He was free-hearted, neighborly, and honest. His many friends are sad about his untimely passing. Funeral services were held at Webster, conducted by Rev. Fred S. Nichols. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. The singers were: Arthur Spangler, Clem Duffy, Gladys McConnell, and Ada Latherow, who were accompanied at the organ by Ethel Callahan. The songs were: 'We shall gather at the river,' 'Good night here but good morning up there' and 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.' Pallbearers were: George Latherow, Hugh Hasten, Floyd Hamm, Jom Whitten, Fay Brooks and Russell Myers.4 |

He had been in feeble health for many years and in 1943 suffered a broken hip which kept him in the hospital for a number of months. After his return to Carthage he lost his home by fire and after which he was removed to a nursing home in Warsaw. Two weeks ago while walking he was thrown to the sidewalk by a heavy wind and his other hip was fractured. He was taken to the hospital for care, but succumbed to the injury. Mrs. Porter died in Keokuk about two years ago. He is survived by a son, William living in St. Marys, this county, and a daughter in Pueblo, Colorado, also a sister, Mrs. Nancy Cox, of Carthage, and a brother John of Quincy. One of the census citation details, either 1900 or 1910 is wrong. They are both the same. |

| Note* | The Carthage Republican; Carthage, Illinois; Wednesday; December 2, 1903; Page 5; Column 5 EDMUND GUIN PORTER A well-known farmer and trader, passed away at the family residence in St. Mary's township, one mile east of Middle Creek, at half-past two o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 25, 1903. Death resulted from sarcoma after a confinement of thirty days. An autopsy conducted by Dr. Littlefield, the family physician, and Dr. McDaniels, of Plymouth, confirmed the diagnosis previously made by Dr. Littlefield. Mr. Porter's health had been gradually declining for the past three years, but, as he had worked hard the greater part of his life, his failing health was attributed more to over-work than to the possible existance of any fatal malady. His abandoning work, however, failed to bring about the recuperation hoped for, and he declined so rapidly during the summer that he had since been under constant medical treatment until death relieved his suffering. The subject of this sketch was born at Hillsgrove, McDonough Co., Sept. 6, 1843, hence, on day of death, had reached the age of 60 years, 2 months and 19 days. He went west when about 18 years of age, and, to gratify a roaming disposition which seemed to possess him in early manhood, he traveled quite extensively over the mountain and Pacific slope states for seven years when he returned to the land of his nativity better equipped by reason of his western travels to battle with those rougher elements and obstacles of life which a man of an active nature and pronounced personality by sheer persistence provokes to rise up against them. His father and mother died some 25 years ago, leaving seven children of whom John N., of Carthage, Ill.; Mrs. Lydia Bales, of Lake City, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Mourning, of Tennessee, Ill. are the only survivors. On September 27, 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Francis Mosley, of Middle Creek. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. Minnie Davis, Lealie, Mrs. Musa Boston, Miner C., Merrill D., Blake and Josie. Lealie and Blake died in infancy. The three eldest surviving children -- Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Boston and Miner -- reside at their own homes not far from the parental roof, leaving Merrill just entered upon the estate of manhood, and Miss Josie, 16 years of age, by their mother's side to aid and comfort her in this sad hour of bereavement. Mr. Porter united with the Christian church at Oak Grove about 25 years ago, with which church he retained his membership until the day of his death. On Friday, Nov. 27, after an able and appropriate funeral discourse at Elm Tree M. E. Church by the Rev. Sherman Hill, pastor of the Christran church at Carthage, the remains were born to the Holland cemetery and laid to rest by the side of "Lealie" and "Blake" under the auspices of Plymouth lodge of the Masonic fraternity, into which order Mr. Porter was initiated some 30 years ago. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends witnessed with tear-dimmed eyes, the sad and impressive rites conducted by his brother Masons. After marriage, by force of will power assisted by the material aid and wise counsel and encouragement of a frugal, devoted wife, who to him was a help-meet indeed. Guin abandoned his roving habits, and directed those masterful energies characteristic of the man to the acquisition of a home and its comforts -- none of which he possessed when he entered upon life's unequal warfare. In this he was more than successful for by perseverance, good judgment and attention to business, he gained quite a handsome competency. A stern, unyielding, yet conservative individuality stamped his every act and undertaking. Rainbow chasing was not one of his weaknesses. For him visionary or get-rich quick schemes had no facination. He took no time to build air-castles, but laid his plans for future action with deliberation and discretion. "It is not ease, but effort -- not faculty, but difficulty that makes men" -- in this we find his cardinal rule of action. In the death of Edmund Guin Porter, his loving wife has lost a faithful, devoted husband; his children an indulgent father; the community, a good neighbor, constant friend, and valued citizen.-------------------------------------------------- Wife: Sarah Frances Mosley Children: Minnie Jane Porter 22-Dec-1871; 1-Jan-1950 Jessie Porter circa 1872 . He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Mosley, of Hancock Co., Ill., in 1857. To this union were born 10 children, two of whom died in infancy. Two grown sons, Winston and Marion, and one daughter, Mrs. Jesse Smith, passed away some 20 years ago. The surviving children are, Armstead, Elmer, John, Stanley and Mrs. C. C. Cox, all residents of this county. The wife of the deceased preceded him to the grave 22 years ago, and was laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery, and by her side he sleeps the last sleep, having been borne thither by an escort of his old army comrades Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3, following a very able funeral discourse by Judge C. J. Scofield at the Christian church in Carthage. Deceased had been a member of the Christian church for many years and his life as a Christian and as a man had been such that when the last summons came, he went, 'not as the quarry slave scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfalting trust, approached his grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.' May his awakening greet the brighter dawn, the eternal herald of the day that knoweth no night.4 |

Davis, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Joseph hospital, in Keokuk, following nearly five weeks as a hospital patient, from a combination of incurable diseases. Her age was 78 years, one month and nine days. Minnie Jane Porter Davis was the eldest child of Edmund G. Porter and Sarah Frances Mosley Porter. She was born Dec. 22, 1871, in St. Marys township, Hancock County. As a girl, she spent her social life mostly in the St. Marys and Middle Creek neighborhoods and when Nov. 16, 1890, she was happily married to John W. Davis she continued to live on a farm not far from her old friends and home folks. These newly weds were ambitious and thrifty and soon owned their own farm in the Middle Creek neighborhood, where they lived until they retired in 1938 and moved to Carthage. Mrs. Davis expressed her faith in Christ and united with the Christian church in early womanhood and continued to attend and support that church until the health of Mr. Davis confined her to her home to care for him. Despite her tender care, Mr. Davis passed away in July, 1946. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Davis began to lose her eyesight and fail in health. However, despite her handicaps, she bravely continued to live alone and make regular shopping trips, always on the alert and carrying her old white cane. Many people, especially the older ones, are saddened by her passing and know that they will miss the sound of her cane and a cheery greeting. She leaves to mourn her passing many friends and relatives, including the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Musa Boston, near Carthage; Minor C. Porter, Canton, Ill.; Merrill D. Porter, Carthage; and Mrs. Josephine Strong, Carthage. "Somewhere back of the sunset, Where loveliness never dies, She lives in a land of glory, With blue and gold of the skies. And we who have known and loved her, Whose passing has brought us tears, Will cherish her memory always, To brighten the drifting years." The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Fecht Funeral Home, with Rev. Frank W. Leonard officiating. Lester Rampley will sing "Pilot Me" and "Whispering Hope," accompanied by Mrs. Lowell Smith. Pallbearers will be E. P. Cutler, Arthur Wright, Roy Metz, Walter Rowland, Joseph Lenix and Lloyd Ericson. She had been ill for several weeks, suffering from a heart ailment. Nancy Susan, daughter of John and Mary Mosley Porter was born on December 20, 1871. The old home was located northwest of Plymouth, in what is known as the Middlecreek community. There she spent her early girlhood days and took advantage of such educational facilities as were offered in that period of time. She was claimed as a bride by a progressive young farmer of that section, Carlton Cox, in 1890. To this union a happy family of sons and daughters was born, whose laughter and gaiety filled the household. From the earliest days when she watched over their cradles, Mrs. Cox found their welfare a foremost interest in life. She took rightful pride in her home and in her splendid family. When retiring from farming Mr. and Mrs. Cox purchased a home in Carthage. There they continued to share each incident whether a source of joy or sorrow, until the companionship was severed in the passing of Mr. Cox on July 28, 1940.3 |

On the 4th instant her dead body and that of a sweet little infant in the same casket was born into the church, where appropriate services were held by the writer, after which they were laid away in the little cemetery near by to await the resurrection of the just.
