MEAUX DIED ON FRIDAY; FUNERAL TUESDAY Mrs. Dennis D. Meaux, of this city, died at her home here on Friday morning, June 9, 1939, at 5:30 o'clock aged 82 years. Amanda Ellen Mosley was the daughter of Armstead and Nancy Mosley, early pioneers from Kentucky, and was born Dec. 9, 1857, on a farm ten miles east of Carthage. She was the last surviving member of a family of ten children. On Nov. 26, 1885, she was married to Dennis D. Meaux, a well known school teacher, their golden wedding being observed in 1935. To this union were born three children, Vivian V., her mother's constant companion and nurse; Carlisle of Chicago, and Roy L. of Keokuk. There also survives a grandson, Roy L. Meaux, Jr., of Keokuk, Ia. Mr. Meaux passed away Feb. 20, 1936. Mrs. Meaux was baptized in the Christian faith early in life, and has since been a faithful member of that church. Mrs. Meaux was of an early family of distinction and in her conversation and her life she reflected the high ideals and breeding of her Kentucky ancestry. She was faithful and true to her home and friends. A good woman has gone to her reward. The funeral was held yesterday at the Elms, at 2:00 o'clock p. m., with interment at Oak Grove cemetery. The Rev. Fred Nichols officiated.5 |

He leaves his aged widow and nine children, forty-six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. The writer preached his funeral at Oak Grove church, a very large audience in attendance. Mr. M. was a quiet, christian man, and died in full faith of eternal salvation. After a long and painful illness John Mosley died at his home in this city at 7:30 a. m. Friday, April 5. Mr. Mosley was born in the eastern part of the county, Feb. 13, 1853, and there grew to manhood. On June 22, 1884, he was married to Miss Nellie Price, of LaHarpe, who survives to mourn his loss. Shortly after his marriage he moved to this city and took up the trade of painter and paperhanger which he followed till his last illness came upon him. About ten years ago he became a member of the Christian church under the preaching of Elder Stark and has been a faithful and loyal member since. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges. His illness came upon him several months ago and about eight weeks ago an operation was performed with the hope of effecting relief; but in vain. He continued to fail and death ended his sufferings Friday morning. Mr. Mosley was of a very musical temperament and his skill on the violin was a delight to his friends. As one who loved music his soul was tenderly attuned in sensitive sympathy to the good and true things of life. He was a good man, strong as a king in his honesty and integrity and gentle and faithful as a woman in his friendships. His memory will long remain beloved in the hearts of his friends. The funeral occurred from the Christian church Sunday at 2:30 o'clock, Judge C. J. Scofield officiating. Burial at Moss Ridge, conducted by the I. O. O. F. and K. P. lodges. |

| Note | The marriage date of 10 Jun 1856 which her obituary says is the date and the date the state of Illinois has of 21 Jan 1856 is in question. One thing which may clear up the discreppency is that they may have gotten the licence on 21 Jan 1856 and not gotten married until 10 Jun 1856. Without seeing the original documentation, we can only guess.4 |
| Note* | http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bryant/obits/Robinson_Martha_Jane .html The Carthage Republican / Carthage, Illinois / Wednesday / September 3, 1930 Page 2 Column 2 Webster Last Tuesday, Aug. 26th, grandma, Mrs. Martha Robinson, passed the 94th milestone of her life, in a quiet happy way. In former years it has been the custom for a large company of relatives to meet with her and serve a big picnic dinner, but the extreme heat of the present summer was so hard on her, that this kind act was given up this time. However her children, all except one son, Homer, and family of Colchester, called to spend an hour with her during the day at different times. She was nicely remembered and at the close of the day was ready to retire, feeling it had been a very pleasant day. We all unite in wishing her more such happy days, if it be the Lord's will. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Carthage Republican / Carthage, Illinois /Wednesday / January 31, 1934 Page 8 Column 3 MRS. MARTHA JANE ROBINSON. The funeral of Mrs. Martha Jane Robinson, 97, who died at her home in Webster at 6:45 on Sunday evening, was held in the Webster church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Fred S. Nichols, pastor of the Carthage Christian church officiating. Mrs. Robinson, widow of Marion Robinson, was born in Kentucky on August 26, 1836. Surviving are the following children: John of Webster; Homer of Colchester; Mrs. Frank Pennock, Dallas City, and Ernest and Mrs. Myrtle Houtchens of Carthage. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Carthage Republican / Carthage, Illinois / Wednesday / February 7, 1934 Page 3 Column 1 MRS. MARTHA ROBINSON, OF WEBSTER, DIES Was Almost 98 Years Of Age Mrs. Martha Robinson entered into rest on the evening of Jan. 28, 1934. The summons which called this good woman to her reward came after long lingering near the borderland. After weeks of anxious waiting, suffering, and distress, the death angel folded his arms about her and carried her to the land of rest and gladness. Martha Jane Mosley was the child of Armsted and Nancy Mosley, natives of Anderson county, Kentucky, where this daughter was born, Aug. 26, 1836. Soon thereafter the parents emigrated northward to find, and found, a home upon the fertile farm-lands of Illinois. They later located at, now Oak Grove, in Hancock county, where were reared their family of ten children, of whom the passing of Mrs. Robinson leaves but one remaining --- Mrs. D. D. Meaux, of Carthage. This daughter, Martha, was united in marriage to Marion Robinson, June 10, 1856(1). They founded their home in this community, where they long held residence. Mr. Robinson engaged in business in Webster, which he followed for some years. There after a short sojourn in Fountain Green, he bought the estate and erected the comfortable dwelling which became the family homestead, and which has ever since been held in possession. Here they lived and labored, well deserved success following their faithful efforts. To Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were born eight children, three dying in childhood. Remaining are three sons and two daughters: John A., of Webster; Mrs. Manie Pennock, of Dallas City; Homer, of Colchester; Ernest and Mrs. Myrtle Houtchens, of Carthage. There are also nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. This family circle will long hold affectionate remembrance this dear mother, who for many years gladdened their lives by her well-proven devotion; while they in turn, have done much to bless and brighten her declining days. Upon this good woman the joys of life have been bestowed in ample measure. Yet she was not a stranger to its sorrows. After journeying together for more than a half-century the beloved husband and father was called to his reward. Since that time her son, John, and his good wife, Lillian, have been her constant and kindly companions and caretakers, their faithful and efficient ministry gladdening her heart and adding to her span of life. Their efforts in her behalf were ably seconded by the other loyal sons and daughters, who have bestowed upon this loved one all possible cheer and comfort, uniting in untiring and unfailing endeavor to smooth and brighten her pathway. To few have been granted so carefully guarded a journey to the very sunset gates. During the years of Mrs. Robinson's busy activities her interests naturally centered about her own family circle. In her home she was ever the faithful wife, the wise and loving mother, looking well to the ways of her household; her days filled with helpful service, withal in no way failing in her duty as neighbor and friend, but ever ready to aid when in her power to do so. When because of physical weakness and dimming vision she could no longer meet and mingle with friends as of yore, --- yet her happy greeting and evident pleasure at their coming gave evidence of the deep affection which filled her heart. Mrs. Robinson had placed her life in the heavenly Father's keeping, trusting to His wisdom to guard and to guide. Her faith was well tested and well proven by her patient acceptance of weakness, weariness and intense suffering, with which the advancing years were filled. She was sure that around and about her were the 'everlasting arms.' Thus cheered, thus sheltered, she journeyed onward until the long pilgrimage ended at the gates of the celestial city. Mrs. M. W. Barr. The funeral service was held at the home church on Tuesday, Jan. 30th, at 2 o'clock p. m., conducted by the Rev. Fred S. Nichols, pastor of the Carthage Christian church. She had been a faithful member of the church almost her entire life-time. The choir for this sad funeral was composed of Mrs. C. R. Callihan, organist, with Mrs. J. A. Beebe and Miss Adda Spangler, who sang three lovely duets, very sweetly. The pallbearers, under the instructions of Undertaker Hearne, were Messrs. L. B. Thompson, A. E. Shipman, W. C. Emmings, J. A. Beebe, Burke Harmon and Frank Booz. After the final farewell was taken, the remains were taken to the family lot in the Webster cemetery, and laid to rest by the side of the loved companion and children, who have been waiting in the happy home over there for her coming. The large procession of loving relatives and friends returned to their homes with saddened hearts, to await the summons from on high, when they all hope to meet again. _____________ Our Thanks. The children extend herewith their deepest appreciation and thanks to all who so kindly assisted us in any way during the hours of the sickness and death of our dear mother. We all appreciated that fine sermon by Rev. Nichols, also the lovely obituary by that dear friend, Mrs. M. W. Barr; also the lovely flowers and the kindness of those dear pall bearers, and the sweet songs by that dear choir. God bless you all and reward you one and all for your loving help and sympathy. ---------------------------------- 1. Marriage date may wrong. Obit says June 10, 1856. Pioneer and Lamented Citizen Passes to His Reward. The deceased, Samuel Taylor Mosley, was the son of pioneer parents, Armstead and Nancy Mosley, who emigrated from Anderson county, Kentucky, to Hancock county, Illinois, in the year of 1839, finally settling on section 36, Hancock township, where the subject of this sketch was born Feb. 4, 1847. On Jan. 9, 1873, he was united in marriage to Margaret A. Gibson, and not long thereafter, identified himself with Oak Grove Christian church under the ministry of its pastor, Rev. M. K. Kirk. Mr. Mosley left surviving him, his wife, together with four sons and three daughters, whose names in the order of their seniority, are Arthur C., Luther W., John T., Mrs. Aldie J. Carlton, Mrs. Ida B. Nelson, Lawrence F., and Miss Geraldine. Beside these there survive deceased three sisters, viz.: Mrs. Martha Robinson, of Webster, Ill.; Mrs. Sarah Porter, of St. Marys township, and Mrs. Amanda Meaux, of Carthage, Ill.; four brothers, Wm. Virgil, Winston R., Simeon A., and John F., having preceded him to the beyond. Deceased had been in declining health for several years; on this account, some two years ago, he sold his farm in Hancock township and removed to Ferris, Ill., at which place, Nov. 1st, 1916, he passed away, aged 69 years, 8 months and 27 days. On Nov. 4th, after an able and appropriate funeral discourse at the Christian church in Carthage by its pastor, Rev. E. E. Smith, the remains were borne to Moss Ridge cemetery, where, in the presence of many friends and relatives, they were consigned to their final resting place. Among the papers of deceased, was found in his own handwriting the appended verse. This verse, copied apparently, years ago from some source, is expressive, no doubt of the attitude which he had a right to assume, even then, was an inevitable situation: 'Farewell, father, thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel; But 'tis God who hath bereft us-- He can all our sorrows heal.' Card of Thanks. We desire to express our deep gratitude for the administration of friends during our recent bereavement. Mrs. Samuel T. Mosley, and family. |

| Note* | The Carthage Gazette /Carthage, Illinois / Friday / April 17, 1925 Page 1Column 6 Sarah Frances Mosley was born in Hancock county, Illinois, June 7, 1850. Her parents, Armstead Mosley and Nancy Driskell Mosley were among the early pioneers of the county having emigrated from Kentucky to Hancock township in 1839, where they settled and continuously resided during their long and successful lives. Both lived to a ripe old age, leaving a family of ten children whose names in the order of their ages follow: Mary E. Porter, Martha J. Robinson, William V., Winston R., Simeon A., Samuel F., Sarah F. Porter, (the deceased) John F., Nancy, A. Ellis and Amanda E. Meaux. Only two survivors of the family are left, viz, Mrs. Martha Robinson of Webster, Ill., and Mrs. Amanda Meaux, of Carthage. On the 28th day of September, 1870, the subject of this sketch was married to Edwin Guin Porter. To this union were born the following children, who, in order of seniority, are: Mrs. John W. Davis, Mrs. Samuel H. Boston, both of Hancock county; Miner C., of Macomb; Merrill D., at the parental homestead in St. Mary’s township and Mrs. Josie Hughlett, of Carthage. Two other children, Blake and Lelia, died in infancy. Her faithful and loved companion passed away a number of years ago. A year ago, deceased sustained an injury from a fall from which she never recovered. This injury was followed by a complication of various ills which, despite the attention of the best medical aid, and the kind and faithful ministrations and encouragement of family and friends, failed to stay the hand of the Grim Reaper who released the longing spirit from its pain-racked tenement at 8 o’clock p. m., on the 11th day of April, 1925. In her girlhood, Mrs. Porter united with the Christian church at Oak Grove and lived a life consistent with her profession until called to her reward. Dear mother, sister and friend will be sadly missed from the home council, and from the long-enjoyed society and companionship of a numerous circle of loving friends; yet none of these would recall to her suffering couch the spirit now flown to its realms of eternal rest and happiness. On Easter Eve, in answer to her prayer, “O, Dear Lord, please release me” — her last words uttered in expiring agony — the spirit of our loved one took its flight to the home of Him, who, too, had drunk to its dregs the bitter cup of pain and anguish and had gone to prepare “mansions in the skies” as a home for his suffering children of earth. Dear one, we hope to meet you in that blessed home. Until then, farewell! The funeral services conducted by Rev. Mavity, of Carthage, were held at Elm Tree church on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with all the immediate family and many other relatives and friends present. The interment was at Holland cemetery by the side of her loved companion and little ones. The funeral discourse was well-timed and strikingly applicable to the home and social relationships of our times as well as replete with comforting thought and encouragement to the bereft family and friends of deceased. The song service, beautifully rendered by Miss Eulah Couchman at the organ, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Faulkner, Miss Clara Reed and Mr. Forrest Pittenger, was well chosen and appropriate to the occasion. D. | Note* | The Carthage Republican / Carthage, Illinois / Wednesday / March 31, 1909 Page 3 Column 5 Simeon Anderson Mosley was born in Hancock county, Ill., Nov. 4, 1843, and died in Carthage, Ill., March 27, 1909, aged 65 years, 4 months and 23 days. His parents emigrated from Anderson county, Ky., in 1839, settling in Hancock county, ten miles southeast of Carthage, where his father died June 29, 1887, and his mother Dec. 28, 1905. Simeon was the fourth oldest of a family of ten children, three of whom had preceded him to the grave: Mrs. Mary Porter, in 1883; Wm. V., in 1896; and John F., in 1901, the surviving members of the family being Mrs. Martha Robinson, Winston R., Samuel T., Mrs. Sarah Porter, Mrs. Ann Printy and Mrs. Amanda Meaux, all residents of their native county except Mrs. Printy, who lives in Keokuk, Ia. Mr. Mosley served in the Civil war one year in Company C. 42 Ill. He was a member of Alexander Sympson Post. On Aug. 9, 1866, he was married to Miss Sarah M. Kurry, of near Plymouth, who died Aug. 6, 1904. To this union eleven children were born, those living being Marion, Mrs. Cora Booz, Mrs. Ira Lenix, Burns, Earl, Ray and Hazel, all of whom were present at his death. On the 13th day of March, 1907, deceased was married to his second wife, Mrs. Laura Clutch, of this city, who, assisted by his children and a few faithful friends, for six months of an almost helpless illness resulting from consumption, attended him with that zeal and faithfulness which only those who love can bestow. March 29th, his remains were conveyed to Oak Grove cemetery where they were laid to rest by the side of those of his deceased wife, after an able discourse by Elder W. W. Denham, Christian minister of this city. Each of the floral offerings contributed by this wife and family, the members of the Carthage Christian church, Mesdames Hecox and Chevillon, Alexander Sympson Grand Army Post and by the local lodge of the Home Fraternal League of which his wife is a member, beautifully attested the love and respect of their several donors. The song service was rendered by Mr. Lynn Calihan and wife, the latter presiding at the organ. Mrs. Sol Brown, Miss Grace Geddes and Roy Brandon, all of Ft. Green and vicinity. The writer, not having the power to give the rendition of this part of the ceremony the merit which it deserves, will content himself by saying that for appropriateness and selection and for excellence of expression he has never heard it surpassed on any similar occasion. A most fitting and pathetic1 tribute it indeed was to the memory of him to whom so large a concourse had met to do honor in these last sad rites; fitting tribute to him, who, when the final summons came, 'went not as a quarry slave scourged to his dungeon, but as one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.' ----------------------------------------------- ------ 1 pathetic should probably be sympathetic. ----------------------------------------------------- Hancock County Historical Society / Carthage, Illinois / Siegfried XIX / Page 135 My grandfather Simeon Anderson Mosley was born in Hancock County, Illinois, November 4, 1843 and grew to manhood on the farm which his parents had cleared. He enlisted in the Civil war in 1864 in Company C., 42d Illinois Infantry and was mustered out of service at Fort Lavacar, Texas in 1865. He was a member of the Alexander Sympson Post. In August he was married to Miss Sarah Curry who died August 6, 1904. To this union were born eleven children. Seven are still living, my father, Ray Mosley, being the youngest son, Simeon Mosley came to Carthage, purchased property and lived here until his death which occurred March 27, 1909 aged 65 years.4 |
