| Note* | From the book "History, Harrison County, Iowa", National Publishing Company, 1891, page 619 we have the following account of James D. McKenney's life - "James D. McKenney, was born in Cass County, Mich., February 3, 1844. He is the son of Michael I. and Anna Eliza (Townsend) McKenney, and was the sixth of a family of eight children. He attended two terms of school in Michigan and completed his education in the district schools of Harrison County. The first school he attended in this county was in the winter of 1852-53, in a log schoolhouse on section 6, of Union Township. The school was taught by George White. Our subject has always made his home at the old homestead and now lives on the original land taken by his father in 1851. The father died in 1858 , and in the spring of 1860 the mother rented the farm to Samuel Jack and went to Michigan, and returned in the fall, but our subject remained here all summer and worked for Mr. Jack, continuing for two years, the first year for his board and clothes, but the last year he received $8 per month. It will be remembered he was only in his sixteenth, and in the fall of 1868 he took charge of the place and operated it, his mother keeping house for him until the autumn of 1879, when he bought the other heirs' interest in a hundred and twenty acres, which he still owns. He was married February 6, 1879, to Alpharetta Dakan, a native of Morrow County, Ohio, born December 22, 1854, and is the youngest of a family of three children by Mr. Dakan's second marriage her parents being Ebenezer and Charity (Wagstaff) Dakan. The father was married three times and had five children by his first marriage. The father died in Union Township, August 9, 1883, and the mother died March 10, 1863. Mr. and Mrs. McKenney are the parents of four children, all living - Herbert E., born November 14, 1879; Inman R., September 6, 1881; Guy E. and Nellie E., (twins), October 10, 1888. Mr. McKenney and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, having united in 1890. He is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen at Logan. Politically our subject has always voted with the Republican party, but at present is in sympathy with the Farmers' Alliance movement." From his tombstone in Harris Grove Cemetery, Harrison County, Iowa comes the following quote: "James D. McKenney; 1844 - 1923" From the book "Pioneer History of Harris Grove 1851 - 1861", page 44, by Horace H. McKenney comes the following biography of James McKenney: "James Dixon McKenney was born on McKenney's Prairie, Cass county, Michigan, February 3, 1844, and came to Iowa with his family in 1851, settling in the Grove. He attended the subscription and the public schools of the Grove. A farmer, a very uncertain avocation for the accumulation of wealth. He was married Feb. 6, 1879 to Retta L. Dakan, who was born in Morrow Co., Ohio, Dec. 22, 1854, and came to this country in the fall of 1871. They lived in the old McKenney Homestead in Sec. 12 until 1906, when they sold the old home, and moved to a home in NE1/4 NE1/4 Sec. 11. They were active members of the Harris Grove Farmers Club for many years. They moved to Logan in December 1921, where he lived until called to a brighter home in the Great Beyond. Their children Married Herbert E. Clara Hazlett Ralph J. Guy E. Josephine Beatty Nellie E. Fred Hinton"1,2 |

| Note* | From the book "Pioneer History of Harris Grove 1851 - 1861", page 19 by Horace H. McKenney comes the following quote: "Michael I. McKenney was born in Cayuga county, N.Y., March 1808; in 1817 came with his parents to Ohio, in 1819 to Indiana, then in 1828 to Cass county, Michigan, were on November 1st, 1832, he was married to Eliza Townsend, who was born in Canada July 6th, 1814, and she with her parents in 1815 came to Ohio, and in 1827 to Cass county, Michigan. The family of Michael I. McKenney left Michigan in the early days of October for Western Iowa, traveling overland by wagons, arrived at Kanesville, a small trading point in Pottawattamie County, November 5th, 1851 where they tarried for a short time. They arrived at Harris Grove Nov. 15th, 1851, and bought a claim of Robert Wimmer and moved into a cabin near center of SE1/4 of Sec. 12, Lagrange Township. This home stood near the road leading to Kanesville, or Council Bluffs, and was for a number of years a distribution point for the neighborhood mail, it being brought from Kanesville by any of the neighbors coming therefrom. Others who came with the family from Michigan were Thomas McKenney, father of Michael, and John, also Alex Byers, Oscar Lumis and Hannah Emans. Lumis and Byers in the spring of 1852 went to California, and Miss Emans returned to Michigan. Michael McKenney died July 18, 1858 and Eliza McKenney died March 26, 1906. She was a charter member of the Harris Grove Farmers Club, and an honorary member at her passing into rest. The old home was occupied by James D. McKenney and family until 1905, when it was sold. Children Married Melinda Ephraim T. Elizabeth Zeek Thomas James C. Jasper L. James D. Retta Dakan Claudius T. Alice Culton Ann E. Lorenzo D. Parker"3 |

McKenney; died Nov? 1892?; aged 11y, 9m, 22d" The stone is hard to read and the dates may be wrong. It is strange this boy was not mentioned in "History - Harrison County, National Publishing Company, 1891", page 619 where the rest of the children of James D. and Alphretta McKenney are mentioned. |
