| Note* | Anner Linn obituary says she had an aged sister, a mother who was 90, a brother Levi Linn of Illinois who was 82 and another brother William Linn of Ohio who was 86. Something is wrong with these ages as if her mother was 90 she had children when she was 4. I think it was the sister who was 90 when Anner died.1 |

| Note* | The following is from Karen Dakan, 5-30-97. Biography - Ida May (Long) Dakan Ida May Long was born on a farm in Henry County, Missouri, May 2, 1875. When she was about a year old, the family came to Nebraska in a covered wagon, first living on a farm near Syracuse. A Mr. Cottington loaned them money to get started. A few years later they moved to a farm three miles East and a half mile South of Douglas. Their home was mostly a dug out in the side of a bank, located there because of a spring near by. Ida May (everybody called her May), with her brothers attended the country school on the Northwest corner of the intersection, three miles East of Douglas. They were in school January 12, 1888, when the great blizzard struck in all its fury about the time school was out. Their father met them and they got home safely by following plowed ground. Their mother was so worried that she went to look for them and was lost when they got home. Fortunately she found her way back to the house. No chores were done that night. One of her favorite social events was attending Singing School at the Hopewell Church a few miles Northeast of their home. After living on that farm a number of years her father had a new frame house built on the West side of the road 1/4 mile from school. On December 20, 1893, Ida married Thomas Jefferson Dakan. They lived in Douglas. Tom was in the lumber business with his brother Ed. Two daughters were born there. Isa May, born November 25, 1894, and Ruby, born January 19, 1896. In 1897 the family moved to a farm 4 miles East, 1/2 mile South of Douglas, pioneering again. The house was a shell, two by fours with building paper and siding. Two rooms downstairs and two rooms up, with cornerstones in place of foundation, and the well a block away. Coyotes howling woke the family some nights. Tom would get up and shoot out the door to shut them up. When the chicken house was built, Ida May hitched the family horse, Nellie, to the cart and drove over to her folks to get their chickens. Coyotes followed them home and she would have had to throw a chicken to them if it hadn't been for the dog, Spot, who chased them away when they came too near. A son, Neri James, was born August 27, 1898, while they lived there. In winter the children had breakfast in bed because it was too cold for them to get out. One summer the crops were hailed out and the next summer dried out so the family moved back to town. Tom thought the children should go to school. He had been a teacher a few years and wanted the children to have a good education. He was running an elevator in Douglas at this time and did the rest of the time they lived there. A daughter, Opal, was born September 24, 1900. A year of so later, Tom bought an 80 acre farm one mile south and 1/4 mile east of Douglas. He built a new eight room house on it. The family was real proud of that new house. It didn't have central heating or any modern conveniences. They moved the old house from the other place and used it as a barn. Wilbur Thomas was born there May 25, 1903 and Leva was born May 21, 1905. There was always plenty of hard work with the large family and all the things that women had to do on the farm. Chickens, gardening, milking, churning, etc., etc... Some of the then-up-to-date- conveniences were an out-door cave, a windmill, a large milk house with a long trough. Water was piped from the windmill and ran thru this trough. Milk, cream, butter, etc. were kept in it. The 80 acre farm was purchased with money received from Ida May's father ($3,000) when her father sold his farm and moved to town. Tom Dakan hired Ed Neal to farm for him as Tom was not a farmer and he worked in town at grain elevators. Tom became interested in speculating on the Board of Trade and in 1906 he lost the 80 acre farm through these speculations. The family moved back to Douglas where Tom was running the grain elevator for the Denton Brothers. Not long after that Tom was sent to Talmage to run the Denton Brothers elevator there. The family was real excited about moving to another town. Ida May's folks helped with the packing. Her father made rope handles in the sides of wooden boxes. They put the canned fruit in and poured oats around the jars. People moved by train in those days. The household furnishings were hauled to the railroad station by horse and wagon, loaded into a box car and shipped. Wilfred Archibald was born there, June 28, 1907 and Alberta Stephina was born December 4, 1909. The family liked living in Talmage. The people were friendly, mostly German. The school was good. In 1910 the family moved to Cook. Tom had a job in a flour mill. Toms father, Neri Pelic Dakan, always lived on a farm and was successful both as a farmer and also as a cattle buyer. He always had good pasture for his cattle. About this time, Tom tried to recoup his money by buying horses and cattle, but was not astute and had no pasture for the animals and so was not successful. |

| Note* | He may be mentioned in a will obtained from: htttp://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/greene/ wills.htm. Burried in Brookside Cemetery, Tonica, LaSalle County, Illinois. Stacy and I (David Dakan) found his grave in our trip there in August of 2000. Also buried in the same cemetery are Edith Emily Long and Wayne Parta Long. We could not find either of the graves for them. From LaSalle County Genealogy Guild in Illinois comes the folowing last will and testament of Jefferson L. Long. " Last Will and Testament" - I, Jefferson L. Long, hereby make this my last Will and Testament, that is to say: It is my will that all my property, both real and personal, shall go to my wife, Margaret A. Long, to do with and dispose of as she wishes. I also name and appoint my said wife to act as Executrix of this my will, without bonds for the faithful performance thereof. In Witness Whereof, I hereunto sign this instrument and declare it to be my last will and testament, this 18 day of April, A.D., 1925." Signed Jefferson Long Witnessed - H.I. Baldwin (Middle initial may be J.) Walter Vanlingham (Difficult to read and may be incorrect.) Also in my file (David O. Dakan) are several records obtained from the probate file obtained from the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild. Information obtained is in the form of testimony from Margaret A. Long concerning his children and where they live. The 1880 census for Deer Park, LaSalle County, Illinoin says he was living with the David Richey family, who was apparently his boss as he is also listed as being in the Tile Manufacturing business. This census also says both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. The 1900 census for Tonica, LaSalle County, Illinois says both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. 3 |
