Note* Logan Nucleus - Feb 14, 1901 - "Actuated by motives which remain a mystery to her family and friends, Mrs. M.L. Dakan committed suicide in her home in Mondamin Saturday evening sometime after 6 o'clock. The preparations for her self destruction were planned and carried out with terrible deliberation. Mr. Dakan, who was once county superintendent of schools of Harrison County, and for the past few years has been superintendent of the Mondamin schools was called to Little Sioux Saturday to attend the meeting of the West Side teacher's association. From all appearances, Mrs. Dakan had been planning the terrible deed for some time and immediately after Mr. Dakan left Saturday afternoon she commenced preparations for the deed. To prevent anyone interfering she first secured all the doors and windows of the residence, then she placed a large extension table in the center of the living room, pulling the leaves apart about 2 feet. She then placed a chair on the table, over the opening, and then mounted the chair drove a large nail into the ceiling, first removing the plaster from the beam into which she afterwards drove the nail. She then attached a rope to the nail and placing her head into the noose formed at the end of the rope then kicked the chair from under her. Just how long life had been extinct when the body was found in unknown, but when Mr. Dakan reached home about midnight he found every door and window of the house securely nailed. Calling assistance one of the doors was forced and immediately upon entering the house the gruesome spectacle was revealed. The remains will be brought to Mo. Valley and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. By those intimately acquainted with the family the statement is made that the deceased of late years suffered from a temporary mental derangement and it is the supposition the deed was committed while she was undergoing one of these attacks."

Note* Her death certificate was signed by Walter C. Dakan. I (David Dakan) have a copy of the death certificate. She is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California in the Sunrise Slope area in lot 485.
The family group sheet from Arlene Vrooman says she was the first of six children born to William Ridge King and Esther Mary Jessup. She had three sisters, Annie Pemama Stillwell, Sophronia J. Inglis and Ida Alice Tetro, two brothers, Austin J. and George William and a 1/2 brother, Otis Monroe King whose mother was Wm. King's second wife, Mary Garden. Widowed just 38 days, Mary Ellen died at age 78 years from a cerebral hemorage. She is buried beside her hesband at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. (Sunrise Slope, lot 485, grave #2. They had been married 50 years. Two of Mary Ellen's sisters (Arlene Vrooman's great-grandmother Annie King and Ida King Tetro lived with their families in the Los Angles area in neighboring communities. The Dakans, Tetrr and Stillwell families interact a family functions for three generation. There were 'cousins' at Arlene Vrooman's mothers funeral in 1985.
