| Note* | From a copy of a letter from Uncle Percy's letter. "Grandfather William Dakan was in the war of 1812. Great Grandfather (Ebenezer Dakan, added by David O. Dakan for clarification) was in the Revolution of 1776, but yet have no record to prove it authentically. Grandfather William Dakan was twice married. The children became separated living in various parts of U.S.". William and John Daken are listed on the same page in the 1820 Census of Ohio County, Virginia. William Daken in 1820 had living with him two males 0-10 years (b. 1810 - 1820), one male 26 - 45 years (b. 1775 - 1794) and two males 45 & up (b. Before 1775). William Dakin also had 3 females 0-10 years (b. 1810 - 1829), 3 females 16-26 years (b. 1794 - 1804), and one female 45 & up (b. Before 1775). Also on the same census is Jacob Daken. John Dakin in the 1820 census described above had one male 26 - 45 years (b. 1775 - 1794) who was presumably John himself and 2 females 0 - 10 years (b. 1810 - 1820) and one female 16 - 26 years (b. 1794 - 1804) who was presumably John's wife. Found William Dakan on LDS microfilm 0337938 which was the 1830 census for Belmont County, Ohio. This person was on page 278 which indicated he and his household lived in Pultney Township, Belmont Co., Ohio. The census spelled his last name as Daken and listed the following as living in the household. 1male under 5 yrs, (b 1825-1830 - Neri P. Dakan?), 2 males 5-10 yrs (b 1820 1825 - Hiram Dakan? and John Dakan?? he does not quite fit)), 1 male 20-30 yrs (John Dakan?? he does not quite fit), 1 male 40-50 yrs (b 1780-1790 - William?), 3 females 5-10 yrs (b 1820 1825 - Suzella, Catherine and Lucinda?? she does not quite fit), 2 females 10-15 yrs (b 1815-1820 - Elizabeth and Melinda) and 1 female 30-40 yrs (b 1790-1800 - Jane Dakan (Ross)?). There is still one child which we do not know about in this household and he is a male. See note on John Dakan about John being the seventh son of William. We may almost infer that we now know about the existence of one son older than John, but do not know his name. The 1850 census for Morrow County, Ohio shows the following people living with William Dakan in Congress Township of the county Name Age Page Dakan, William 64 464a Dakan, Jane 54 464a Dakan, Catharine 25 464a Dakan, Lucinda 23 464a Dakan, Neri 20 464a Dakan, Caroline 18 464a The Family Group Sheet from Nyda Ping (File # 410-46), says 1860 census for Camden Township, Maysville, DeKalb County, Missouri has listed William Dakan, age 75, farmer, value of real estate owned as $1,133, value of personal estate owned as $458, born New York. Living with him was Susannah, age 50, housekeeper, born in Ohio; Thomas H. B., age 4, born in Missouri; Sarah Harnes, age 12, born in Indiana and Susannah Harnes born in Indiana. Possibly these last two children belonged to Susannah Hoemer who was the wife of William Dakan by then. Also a question about who is Thomas H. B. age 4. We have two Thomas H. B.'s in the Dakan family, neither one of which belongs to William as a son. Neither one was born in 1856 as this fellow would have been to be 4 at the time of the 1860 census. Karen Dakan has William Sr. as being in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. I wonder if his son wasn't in the War of 1812 since we have a letter from Percy Dakan stating "Grandfather William was in the War of 1812." William Jr. was Percy's grandfather. Karen Dakan in "Chronology of the Dakan Family", says after Caroline was born in 1832 they moved to the Columbus, Ohio area. She says William was a miller and accumulated fine property. In 1853 they left Ohio and moved to DeKalb County, Missouri. Karen Dakan says he died in 1865 or 1867 at the age of 74. Although for purposes of this family tree file, I (David O. Dakan) have put William Dakan as the son of Ebenezer Dakan, I am not sure that William Jr. is not the son of William Sr. Karen Dakan also says in Memoirs - The Dakans and the Titcombs his father was William. William Dakan according to the Cumberlain Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania Tax Records for 1810 paid taxes on 2 horses, 2 cows and 2 oxen and was a single man. Again in 1815 William Daken (married) paid taxes on 80 acres, 1 house, 1 distillery, 2 horses, 1 cow, and 1 dog. On the same tax role was Thomas Daken. The same tax role in 1819 shows William Dakin paying taxes on 1 grist mill, 1 saw mill, 2 horses and 4 cows. Also on the same tax role was John Daken. By 1820 there were no Dakans listed on the tax roles for Cumberlain Township. From a tombstone inscription in the Maysville Cemetery, Maysville, Missouri is the following: Wm. Dakan Died June 11, 1867 81 years, 8 months, 12 days "Illegible line" Shake at deaths Alarm " ", but the voice that Jesus " ", to call them to his arms For additional information about the early Missouri Dakans' see Morris Levering. The e-mail from Karen Dakan, 23 May 1997 says his father's name was William and that they came over to this country from County Cork, Ireland.11,12,13,14,15 |
