| Note* | "The History of West Virginia, Old and New", Published 1923, The American Historical Society Inc, Chicago and New York, Volume III, page 32-33, orovides the following biography: "Robert Gillespie Dakan has developed at Rosbys Rock, Marshall County, a large and prosperous general merchandise business, in which he is now associated with his sons Joseph E. and George B., under the firm name of R. G. Dakan & Sons. Mr. Dakan was born at Glen Easton, this county, November 3, 1861, and is a son of John M. and Eliza (Terrell) Dakan, the latter's father, Amos Terrell, having been an influential citizen of his day in Pleasant Valley, Marshall County. John M. Dakan passed his entire life in Marshall County and was eighty-two years of age at the time of his death. His father William Dakan came from Pennsylvania and became a pioneer settler in Marshall County, the Terrells likewise having come from the old Keystone State, and the wife of Amos Terrell having been a member of the old and prominent Braddock family of Pennsylvania. Amos Terrell reclaimed and developed one of the excellent farms of Marshall County, and was one of the expert hunters of wild game in this section in the early days, he having died at the age of seventy-eighy years. John M. Dakan learned and followed the carpenter's trade, and later he engaged in farm enterprise, besides conducting a general store at Rosbys Rock. For a number of years he conducted a hotel at Weston, Lewis County, and he passed the closing years of his life in the home of his son Robert G., of this sketch, his wife having preceded him to eternal rest by about three years and having been about eighty year of age at the time of her death. John M. Dakan was left an orphan in early youth, and he depended upon his own resources in making his way in the world. He was a man of sterling character and ever commanded unqualified esteem. Of his children eight attained to years of maturity, and of the number two sons and four daughters are living in 1921, the elder of the two sons being Joshua, a resident of Linestone, Marshall County. Robert G. Dakan gained hes early education in the common schools of his native country and as a boy began to assist in his fathers store. In 1878 he went with his parents to Weston, and there he assisted in his fathers hotel until 1880, when he returned to Rosbys Rock and became clerk in the general store of William Lutes, whose daughter he later married. He has continued his active association with the mercantile business at this place during the long intervening years, and now has the distinction of being the oldest merchant on the Fourth Division of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, between Wheeling and Grafton. In 1882, when Mr. Dakan purchased the business of his father-in-law, his was one of three stores at Rosbys Rock, the other two having been conducted by S. J. Elliott and L. G. Martin, both of the other stores having eventually been purchased by Mr. Dakan, who consolidated the stocks of goods wiht that of his original establishment. He has been a successful buyer and shipper of grain and live stock, besides which he is associated with Mr. Cox, of Cameron, in the buying and shipping of wool upon an extensive scale, the firm having shipped more than 300,000 pounds in the season of 1921, and its average annual expenditure for wool being $100,000, For several years Mr. Dakan was a member of the firm of Dakan & Sivert, which conducted a store at Moundsville. The mercantile trade of R. G. Dakan & Sons at Rosbys Rock has grown to large volume and extends over a wide radius of country tributary to this thriving village. The two sons were admitted to partnership in 1917. Mr. Dakan has been prominent in the local councils of the democratic party, and as his party's moninee for sheriff of the county, but was unable to overcome the large republican majority. For the past two years he has served as delegate to the state conventions of his party in West Virginia. At the age of twenty-one years Mr. Dakan married Miss Elizabeth Lutes, and of their four children the eldest son, Henry G. died at the age of thirty-two years, he having had active charge of his fathers farm at the time, and his widow and four sons being still on the farm, the sons being Harold, Robert, Lawrence and Howard. Bessie, eldest of the children, is the wife of C. E. Bonar, of Lisbon, Ohio; and Joseph E. and George B. are partners in their fathers mercantile business. Joseph E. married Rhea Gorby, and they have one son, Joseph E. Jr. George B. married Miss Eliza Kull, and they have one son, George Bruce, Jr. |

| Note* | Unknown Texas branch of Dakan family. Do not know where he fits in to my (David O. Dakan) family. Information from Earlene (Dakan) Hall via Gerome Dakan says he died of dehydration. Information from Earlene (Dakan) Hall via Gerome Dakan says he was a trapper, rancher, very handy in making tools. His sons were similar. He was quiet and never said much, but was firm in all things. Additional information from Earlene Dakan Hall vis Gerome Dakan is a follows: " Robert Roy Dakan Lavonia Vaughan Dakan Children: Lannie Ray Vinnie Bannie Gerome Boyd (Buck) Cicero Roy (Toots) Thomas Eulie (Tom) Otis (Ote) (died) Jeff R.R. (Grandpa) died of dehydration, born October 27, 1858, died December 17, 1935. Lavonia (Von, Grandpa calle her)(Grandma) died of cancer (22 years worth) at the temple that started with a mole and in spite of treatement (the latest of that day and time) never did clear up - they tried skin graft (binding her arm to her face for 6 weeks, didn't take) radium treatments, etc., but it continued to eat its way to her brain and she died in great pain in August 29, 1932 while living with Tom and Adella on Bisbee Street, born May 28, 1860." Note: There is more to this testament and I have included it with the appropriate people who are discussed. Included is information about Cicero, Vinnie, Lanie Ray, Gerome Boyd and Lavonia Vaughn Dakan. |

| Note* | Information from Earlene (Dakan) Hall via Gerome Dakan says she died of a stroke. The following is an account of Rosa Helen Ban's early life as typed by Earlene Dakan Hall and related to her family. It was from a letter written April 15, 1969. It came to me (David Dakan) from Gerome Boyd Dakan III and is reproduced here as I got it. " We lived near Eastland, Texas, where Cicero and Tom were born. In 1897 we moved to Oklahoma - stayed one year- came back to Eastland - Lived in a small log cottage a few months, then moved to Thurber, Texas, a coal mining town. Lived there three years - 1898, 1899, 1900. Then Papa farmed for 7 years. First year he farmed, we lived near Eastland, Texas in 1901 - that was the year the grasshoppers hit Texas and ate all the crops. Then we lived on the Ike Roberts farm in 1902 - Otis was born there. Then in 1903 we lived on a farm near Hog Springs Church. Then in 1904 we lived on the John Hulls' farm. Then in 1905 we lived on Clark place - Papa bought us a new piano. In 1906 we lived on the Barrett farm - Lanie married there. Us children want to school at Pilot Knob there. In 1907 we lived on the Garrett farm. Papa moved each year. All these farms were near Stephenville, Texas. We were happy and had wonderful times at each place we lived. The last part of 1907 we moved to West Texas in a covered wagon - took 21 days to make the trip from Stephenville to Grandfalls. In 1908 we lived on a farm in the Pecos Valley - 5 miles from Grandfalls. We lived on the ranch about 4 years. He sold the ranch in 1912. In July 1912, Papa, Mama, the four boys, Gant and I moved to Beeville, Texas in a covered wagon. They stayed a few months and came back to Grandfalls and Buena Vista, Texas. Buck's mother and father Sarah Lavonia Vaughan Dakan. Born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1860. Married Robert Ray Dakan - who was born at Terrell, Texas in 1858. They married at Canton, Texas in 1884 or 1885 - married 47 or 48 years. Papa's mother's name was Alvira Dakan. They tell me his fathers name was John, too. I don't remember any John Dakan. Moma's mother's name was Lucy Vaughan - fathers name was John Vaughan. They had 9 children --- she died in El Paso, August 29, 1932. She was 72 years old. He died December 17, 1935 in El Paso - he was 77 years old. Mama died at Tom's house and Papa died at Lanie's house. THIS IS THE RECORD IN THE BIBLE. R. R, Dakan, born October 27, 1858 - Died December 17, 1935 Mrs. Sarah Lavonia Dakan, born May 28, 1860 - Died August 29, 1932. Lanie Ray Dakan Williams, born November 16, 1885, died July 17, 1968 Vinnie Lavonia Dakan Isascks, born August 10, 1889, died February 15, 1962. Rosa Helen (Bannie) Dakan Grozw , born April 4, 1891, died Gerome Boyd (Buck) Dakan, born April 25, 1893, died October 31, 1971. Cicero Roy Dakan, born January 28, 1895, died April 6, 1930. Thomas Uly Dakan, born September 7, 1897, died October 1979 Otis Harvey Dakna, born July 17, 1902 died There were two boys who died, Jeffie, the second child (next to Lanie) was one year old when he died. Then, a precious little nine day old boy, born at Thurber, Texas in 1899 - he was next to Tom. I don't remember the date of Jeffie. We never lived in town. We all lived in Eastland, Texas for a few months during the oil boom. You (Earlene) were a small baby - it was 1919. My four brothers worked at the Ford Garage while there. The Dakans (most of them) came originally from Terrell, Texas in Van Zant County. Robert Ray Dakan (Grandpa) married Sarah Lavonia Vaughne (Uncle Tom thinks this is the correct spelling of Vaughne instead of Vaughan) Robert Ray Dakan's sister, Sarah, married Zachery (Zach) Vaughne - hence, a brother and sister married a sister and brother. There were four children (brothers and sister of Robert Ray) in this Dakan family.... 1) Miles (Grandpa's blind brother, who's wife's name was Aunt Nancy. They had three children - Gilbert, Ode, and Eula (daughter). 2) Ed (nothing on him and 3) Sarah who married Grandma's brother Zachery. Their children were: Mae, Linnie, Minnie, Clara and Bracey (daughters, Hardin, Charlie and Claude (sons). Grandma's brother's (don't know this one's name) son, Jack, was one-legged. Grandpa had a cousin, William Dakan, who was a Texas Ranger at one time, and Uncle Tom remembers his as being blind, also."6 |

| Note* | According to an e-mail from Karen Dakan, dated 21 April, 1999 which passed on recollections of W.A. Dakan (Fritz), Ruby went to school at Peru State Normal School, Nemaha County, Nebraska and became a teacher. Her first husband was Ernest L. Holden. He was wealthy and they lived in Burr, Nebraska. He had a drinking problem and Ruby divorced him, getting a Cadillac and a 160 acre farm in the process. Jim Shea was her second husband who was an Irishman and a wastrel. He tried to run off with her money and did get a good bit of it. Her third husband was Paul Stuckey. The last marriage was a good one. Ruby never had any children with any of these husbands.7 |

| Note* | Simon (Joshua) Dakon lived in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1810. According to the Federal Census for Greene County, Pennsylvania, Simon (Joshua) Dakon had 3 males 0 - 10 years (b. 1800 - 1810, and one male 26 - 45 years (b. 1765 - 1784) presumably Simon (Joshua) and also one female 0 - 10 years (b. 1800- 1810), three females 10 - 16 years (b. 1794 -1800), one female 16 - 26 years (b. 1784 - 1794). He lived in the same county and state as Ebenezer Dakan in 1810. According to the Greene County, Pennsylvania, Cumberlain Township Tax Records for 1810, Simon Dakan (Note spelling) owned 1 Cabin and lot and 1 Cow. Also on the same tax role is Ebenezer Dakan who owned 121 acres, 60 cleared, 1 house and barn. Also there at the same time and place was William Dakan (Single man) who owned 2 horses, 2 cows and 2 oxen. His father may have been called William Dakan, but Donald C. Dakan in the Family Group Sheet for Joshua (Simon) Dakan had it as a question mark. Joshua most probably is the same person as Simon Dakan (1780). This information from Willis R. Dakan Jr. (Bill). The 1860 census index for West Virginia has a Simon Dakan living in Marshall County near John M. Dakan (his son?). If this person is the same on for this record, the date of his death which we have as about 1850 is wrong as he was still alive in 1860. This may be another Simon Dakan we know nothing about also.12 |

| Note* | He made his home near Savannah, Missouri, until about 1904 and then moved to a farm west of Stanberry. 1860 Census, Savannah, Mo.: Name, Place of Birth. (Age 4 at time of census.) He was the seventh son of a seventh son according to family stories. (Maxine Workman and I (David O. Dakan) can't figure out why because he is the seventh son of a first son by all our records. At any rate folk lore has it that the seventh son of a seventh son is endowed with the ability to heal the sick. Maxine Workman tell that he was called "Doc" for that reason and many people sought him out for his supposed healing powers. She believes he treats the whole thing as a joke. If he really was the seventh son of a seventh son, something is very wrong with our knowledge of William Dakan's family. 1910 census says he was born in Missouri, his father was born in Ohio (which does not agree with our information) and his mother was also born in Ohio. According to the Application for Letters of Administration for the estate of John Dakan, Spencer B. lived in Andrew County, Missouri in 1876 when his father died. Letha Marie Shull Mowry, 417 S. Walnut, Maryville, Mo, 64468-2464 has his date of birth as 1854, Missouri. Also says he lived in Andrew County, Missouri. The following is a quote of his obituary, via Maxine Workman. "Spencer Brown Dakan Spencer Brown Dakan, the son of John and Rachael Dakan, was born August 21, 1853 and died April 8, 1923, aged 69 years, 7 months and 17 days. He made his home near Savanah, Missouri until about nineteen years ago when he moved to a farm west of Stanberry. On December 26,1875 he was married to Miss Elsie Jane Watson. His wife died September 30, 1915 He is survived by eight children, two girls and six boys: O.H. DeMoss of Turney, Missouri; Carl S. of Portland, Oregon; Clyde O. of Rock Island, Ill.; Everett L. of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. R. E. Shelby of Maysville, Mo.; Hollis G. of Kansas City; Charles L. and Clarence S. of Stanberry. There are twenty grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. C. C. Davis. Interment at High Ridge." 6 |

| Note* | I (David O. Dakan) found a Suzilla Daken in the Family Tree Maker, Selected U.S./International Marriage Records from Yates Publishing Company, CD #403. This source says she married Samuel Stobbs who was born 1810. They were married in 1832. Source #2911.017 from Yates Publishing Company. Nyda M. Ping, Family Group Sheet for Samuel Stobbs claims as her source 1850, 1860 and 1880 census for Missouri. I (David O. Dakan) have not found this information, but I haven't looked under the Stobbs name. She also claims their place of residence was Andrew County in 1850 and in 1880 it was DeKalb County. She also cites several books about the Stobbs family. Nyda Ping, Family Group Sheet for Samuel Stobbs says she belonged to the 1st Baptist Church of Maysville, Missouri. A letter from Nyda Ping says the 1860 census for Camden Township, DeKalb county, Missouri has both Sarah Stobbs and Lucilla Skimmerhorn/Scammagorn living there. The same letter also says the 1880 census for Grant Township, DeKalb county finds Sarah Stobbs and two sons living with a Susan Scammahorn.6 |
