Karen Dakan says according to the Social Security Records he was born in Missouri, not Nebraska as we have it. The date is correct. Social Security Death Index says he was born 27 Aug 1893 not 1898. It also says his last known address was Crawford County, Kansas. According to an E-mail from Karen Dakan, dated 21 April, 1999 which passed on recollections of W.A. Dakan (Fritz), Neri James was a salesman in the meat business. He worked for one of the big meat companies, selling meat to meat markets and grocery stores. He and Irene had no children.10 |

| Note* | Karen Dakan - Memoirs - The Dakans and the Titcombs has his middle name spelled Peleg. It also says "While N.P. lived in Maysville, he was the first proprietor of the first hotel in town. Later, he operated a general store, but had to close it because the Civil War guerrillas robbed shipments of merchandise coming by rail from St. Louis and N.P. had to pay for them anyway. They left Maysville and went to Illinois where they spent some time. They then settled on a farm two miles south of Nebraska City, Nebraska. At the farm they built large cattle feeding pens and large corn cribs all made of split rails (trees split lengthwise). N.P. fattened cattle and was a business partner of J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City (He was U.S. Secretary of Agriculture). Mr. Morton had the money and N.P. had the know how. After a while, N.P. had money too. Mother (Lucinda daughter of N.P. and Lydia) was born on the farm at Nebraska City. She used to tell us how her father, (N.P.) when he was getting ready to buy cattle to fatten, would put his money belt under his shirt and his gun on his hip, and ride away on his horse for Abilene, Kansas and other frontier town to buy the cattle driven up from Texas on the Chisholm and other trails. She (Lucinda) also told that in the fall of the year, that wagon loads of freshly harvested corn would line up out of sight, waiting to sell and unload the corn at N.P.'s corncribs. She also said that some of the farmers would put rocks in the bottom of their wagons so that the loads would weigh more and they would get more money for their corn. When Mother (Lucinda) was still a little girl, they moved to Douglas, Nebraska. N.P. built a very nice home on his farm but sold it before long. Then he bought the farm across the road and built another very nice house there. Lucinda relates the first time she came to the Douglas home that when the buggy stopped she and Arch jumped out of the buggy to look for a rock to put under the buggy wheel so the buggy wouldn't roll. Where they lived at Nebraska City the land was hilly but in Douglas the land was flat and they didn't need the rock. N.P. was a personal friend of William Jennings Bryan and Mother (Lucinda) related to us about times that Mr. Bryan was a dinner guest at their house. In 1902, N.P. sold his property at Douglas and purchased a 240 acre farm located two miles south ho Hebron, Nebraska. This farm had a large (12 rooms and 12 closets), stately house on it. Later he acquired another 160 acre farm and a 120 acre farm. He lived there with his children, Alice, Edwin, Lucinda and Archibald until he died." Karen Dakan "Chronology of the Dakan Family" indicates Neri began farming on his own and from 1854 to 1857 he farmed 200 acres in DeKalb County, Missouri. From the period of 1857 thru 1863 Neri was engaged in general merchandising. Her records also indicate Neri went to college at "Peru Normal." In 1863 to 1866 they moved to Somerset, Illinois, where Neri was a merchant for 3 years. In 1867 they moved to Nemaha County, Nebraska. In the spring of 1868 they settled near Nebraska City, in eastern Otoe County. Four children were born here. Then in the summer of 1883 Neri moved to the western part of Otoe County to Douglas, Nebraska. Apparently after his wife died in 1898, Neri moved to Hebron where he died. Several of his children, among them Mary Alice, Edwin, Lucinda and Archibald were living in Hebron as they all died there. Karen Dakan - "Memoirs - The Dakans and the Titcombs" indicates Neri died at his home, two miles south of Hebron, Nebraska. Following is a quote which is from the "Portrait & Biographical Album of Cass & Otoe Counties" which was published by Chapman Brothers in Chicago, 1889, page 546. "Neri P. Dakan, a prominent farmer and stock dealer of Hendricks Precinct, has a fine tract of land on Section 2, where he located in the spring of 1884. He is the offspring of a good family, being the son of William and Jane (Ross) Dakan, the father a native of New York State, and the mother of Pennsylvania. The parents were married in the latter state, whence they moved to Ohio, where the father, who had learned the miller's trade, carried on milling and farming, and accumulated fine property. In 1853 he left Ohio, moving to DeKalb County, Mo., where he retired from active labor a few years later, and departed this life in 1865, at the age of seventy-four years. The mother also died at the homestead in Missouri in 1853, at the age of fifty-two. The paternal grandfather of our subject, also William Dakan by name, did good service as a soldier, first in the Revolutionary War under Washington, and later in the War of 1812. (Note from David O. Dakan - I believe this must be in error. The two wars were 36 years apart. We also have a letter from Percy Dakan which says Grandfather Dakan served in the War of 1812. He is talking about his grandfather, William Dakan Jr.) To the parents of our subject there were born nine children, six of whom are still living, namely: Melinda, Suzella, Lucinda, Highram, Neri P. (our subject) and Caroline. The deceased are: John, Elizabeth, and Catherine. Neri P. was born in Belmont County, Ohio, December 11, 1829, and spent his early life in the Buckeye State near the city of Columbus. He acquired a practical education in the common school, and remained with his parents until after attaining the majority. In 1854 he began farming on his own in DeKalb County, Missouri, operating on 200 acres of land a period of three years. Later he engaged in general merchandising in DeKalb County for six years. Thence he went to Somerset, Illinois where he carried on merchandising very successfully, and he continued for three years. During the summer of 1867 our subject came with his family overland to Nemaha County, this State, and spent the winter there. The spring of 1860 (sic. should be 1868) found him looking around for a location in this county, and he first settled on a tract of land about three miles south of the present site of Nebraska City. He purchased seventy acres of land, upon which he lived and labored until 1883. He built up a good farm from the uncultivated soil, and gave considerable attention to stock-raising, in which he met with success. In the spring of 1883 Mr. Dakan changed his residence from the eastern part to the western part of this (Otoe) county, having purchased his present farm of 320 acres on section 2. Here he has very fine improvements, comprising of a fine dwelling with a good barn and other necessary out-buildings, an orchard of five acres, and a grove of cottonwood, maple, ash and elm trees. There is also a fine tract of natural timber, and a never-failing stream of water running through the farm. He had fully twenty acres in timber. The marriage of our subject took place in DeKalb County, Missouri, January 21, 1858, his bride being Miss Lydia, daughter of F.B. Titcomb and Mary (Farrer) Titcomb. F.B. Titcomb was born in Portland, Maine, and his wife, Mary, near the city of Cleveland, Ohio. They were married in the latter state. F.B. Titcomb was an educated man, and a professor in the city schools of Cleveland, Ohio. The family moved to Cook County, Illinois, where F.B. abandoned teaching for the pursuits of agriculture, and from there went to Clinton County, Iowa. In 1854 they moved across the Mississippi River into DeKalb County, Missouri, where F.B. Titcomb departed this life in the spring of 1872, at the age of fifty-five years. The mother (Mary) is still living, at the age of eighty-two years, on the old homestead in Missouri. Their children were: Edward, Elvina, Lydia (Mrs. Dakan), Stephania, and Amria. Mrs. Dakan was born in Lake County, Illinois, January 26, 1840. Of her union with our subject there are five children: Thomas J., Alice, Edwin, Lulu, and Archie. They are all at home with their parents. Mr. Dakan was the nominee at the last election for County Commissioner on the Democratic ticket, which fact sufficiently indicates his politics. (He was elected to this post in the election). He has served as Moderator in his school district, and is the encourager of those enterprises calculated to advance the people in morality and intelligence. Both he and his estimable wife are members of the Baptist Church at Nebraska City. Mrs. Dakan is a lady of great intelligence and refinement, amply fitted to be the companion of such a man as her husband. The stock operations of Mr. Dakan are quite extensive, as he feeds sometimes as many as 500 head of cattle in one year. He identified with the I.O.O.F., while living in Missouri." Added at the bottom is the note: "The subject of this article is the grandfather of Isa May Dakan Brooks, her father being Thomas Jefferson Dakan the son of the subject. Isa May Dakan Brooks is the mother of Robert Wilsey Brooks who is my father. (I am Lynnette A. Brooks Puderbaugh) 20 |
