| Note* | In 1912 Edwin and Lucinda were living in Fleming, Colorado. This information apparently came from the obituary of Neri Pelic Dakan, who died in 1912. Drexel Dakan von Forell - "The Dakans and the Titcombs" says Lucinda (who was his mother) was born January 7, 1873 at Nebraska City. She died April 12, 1955 at Hebron, Nebraska. She grew up in Nebraska City and Douglas, Nebraska. During this time she took oil painting lessons and became a fine artist. Drexel has a number of her paintings. The last wall hanging that she painted was a picture of a cowboy watering his horse at a watering hole. She always said this was a picture of my (Drexel) Dad. This was done when I (Drexel) was a small boy. I don't know who has the picture now. After that arthritis in her hands stopped her painting until she was sixty years old. Her last painting was on an old butter churn. She painted a summer scene on one side and a winter scene on the other. This painting is in the Drexel Dakan von Forell household. When she was twenty years old, she joined the Douglas Christian Church and was baptized on New Years Day in the big livestock watering tank on the farm. Her father and brothers drained the tank and chopped the ice out of it and then dumped fresh water into the tank. She and several others were baptized (Immersed) that day. She said that they had blankets and quilts to wrap around themselves and went to the house to change clothes. No one caught cold." According to an E-mail from Karen Dakan, dated 21 April, 1999 which passed on recollections of W.A. Dakan (Fritz), Lucinda inherited a farm from her father (Neri Pelic). Fritz doe not know why she was the one who got the farm, but there should be records somewhere as to why.8 |

| Note* | The following is a quote from "History - Harrison County, Iowa", National Publishing Company, 1891, page 841 - "Marquis Lafayette Dakan, Superintendent of public schools for Harrison County, residing at Logan, has been a resident of the county since August 4, 1868, at which time he settled in Union Township and will form the subject of this biographical notice. He was born in Morrow County, Ohio, October 5, 1846. His parents were Ebenezer and Charity (Wagstaff) Dakan, natives of Pennsylvania and of English descent. His father was twice married. By his first marriage he had four children, and by the second marriage three, our subject being one of that number. The parents both died in Pennsylvania. (Note from David O. Dakan - I believe that Ebenezer died in Logan, Harrison County and Charity died in Morrow County, Ohio) The father was a farmer by occupation and our subject passed his early life in the Buckeye state, being educated at the common and High Schools of that State, attending the latter at Williamsport, where he graduated in 1867. Having fitted himself for a teacher he commenced in 1866 and has followed it in conjunction with farming and attending to the official duties as County School Superintendent ever since. He taught seven terms of school in Ohio, before coming to Iowa, and has taught forty-four terms in Iowa - an average of eleven terms in any one place. The least number of terms in any one place has been four and the greatest twenty three. This indeed speaks well for his qualifications as an instructor. Politically, Mr. Dakan is a stanch supporter of the Democratic party. He served as Assessor of Union Township for eight years, and was elected Superintendent of Schools in 1889, and was the second person elected to this office, on the Democratic ticket in Harrison County and had sixty majority. He was re-elected in 1891 with a majority of nine hundred and forty-seven. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and belongs to Odd Fellows Lodge No. 355, at Logan. Mr. Dakan was married April 1, 1869 in Ohio, to Miss Nancy E. Kelly, the daughter of Caleb and Lenora (Chamberlain) Kelly, who were natives of Ohio, but whose ancestors came from Maryland at an early day. Mr. and Mrs. Dakan are the parents of five daughters: Mattie, Della, Cora, and Ella and Elsie (twins). Our subject is pre-eminently fitted for the position he now holds, being a thorough going and practical educator." From the book "1915 History of Harrison County", by Charles Hunt and Will L. Clark, page 439 is found the fact that "Modale became an incorporated town in April 1881. Serving as mayor from that date are: ..., M. L. Dakan in 1896, ..." The 1870 census index for Iowa shows a M.L. Dakan living in Harrison County, LaGrange Township, Iowa. There is no listing for his wife, but on the same page in LaGrange county are two persons named William Dakan, one on the same page and the other on the page before M.L. Dakan. I beleive (David O. Dakan) that since this was very near the time the above biography says he moved here and the fact he was married in April of 1869 in Ohio that M.L. was in Iowa prior to his wife joining him and was in the process of finding a place to live in Iowa when the census caught him. The biography says he settled in Union Township.9,10 |
