| Note* | From the Herald newspaper for April 12, 1916 we have the following obituary which was obtained from the DeKalb County Historic Society: "Obituary Joseph Dakan was born in Morrow county, Ohio, August 4th, 1848, died at the home of his daughter in Excelsior Springs, Mo., April 3, 1916, age 67 years, 5 months and 9 days. When he was a small boy the family moved to Iowa, from there he came to Missouri in 1872. In 1879 he was married to Dorcas Ann Pierce. To this union there was born one daughter, Mrs. C. E. Rardin. Mr. Dakan was a resident of DeKalb county, Missouri, for 44 years. His health having failed him he sold his farm and came to Excelsior Springs, February 23, 1916, hoping to be benefited. Everything was done for him, having three of Excelsior Springs' best doctors and a specialist being called in from Kansas City, and after six weeks of painful suffering he was transcribed to the mansions of light as a representative of his family circle. He leaves a wife, daughter, grandson. relatives and friends to share the fragrance of his memory in hopes of inseparable reunion. Mr. Dakan was a good Christian man, his family being his chief concern, he spared no pains to secure their welfare. In company with the family and friends the body was taken to Maysville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at the Fairport M. E. Church conducted by Rev. Francisco. The Odd Fellows then paid the last tribute to the deceased, after which the remains were laid to rest at the Fairport Cemetery to wait the resurrection morn." |

| Note* | Letha Marie Shull Mowry, 417 S. Walnut, Maryville, Mo, 64468-2464 says he had no children. According to the World War I Draft Registration for South Dakota, he was living in Sully County, South Dakota when he registered in the 1917-18 time frame. According to "75 Years of Sully County History, 1883 - 1958", pages 242-260 J.R. Dakan did a great deal of work on the establishment of Blaine School in 1921. There is also a picture in the document of the first students attending Blaine School in 1921. Included in the picture were Neva Dakan and Alice Dakan. I (David O. Dakan) have no idea whose children these girls were. Information from Letha Mowry indicates Justin had no children. I do know Justin's brother Earnst Dakan was also in South Dakota, but the records I have indicate he owned land in Tripp County which is quite a ways from Sully County. The same book mentions the Lula B. Dakan farm, where another family moved into in 1940.7 |

| Note* | Is this the same Lee Dakan mentioned in "History of Wetzel County" under the subtopic Wileyville? The article states Lee Dakan hauled merchandise from New Martinsville over mud roads by horse and wagon. He hauled for Shriver Kirkland and the trip took two days. This hauling took place in the early 1870's and Lehigh would have been about 30 at the time. From the book "History, Harrison County, Iowa", National Publishing Company, 1891, page 232 comes the following "Lee Dakan, of section 17, came in 1876. He was a soldier from Ohio. See sketch. Also on page 233 is the following "Lehigh Dakan of section 17, has been in the county since 1876. He was a member of the Thirty-eighth Ohio Infantry and was in the Army of the Cumberland. From the book "History, Harrison County, Iowa", National Publishing Company, 1891, pages 364 and 365 - " Lehigh Dakan, a farmer located on section 17, Union Township, moved to the farm on which he now lives is the spring of 1876. His farm consists of one hundred and twenty acres, paying $8.65 per acre. He built a house 22X28 feet with a wing 12X16 feet; dug a well, erected out buildings, put up a windmill, and set out an orchard of one hundred trees. He has added to his farm until it now contains two hundred and eighty acres. Our subject was born March 17, 1840, in Ohio. He is the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Shaffer) Dakan, who had five children. Our subject lived at home, until about twenty years of age, when he enlisted in Company E, Thirty-eight Ohio Infantry, and was in the Army of the Cumberland, under Gen. Thomas, and remained in the army until May, 1864. He was in the battles of Mill Spring, Murfreesboro, the siege of Vicksburg and other engagements. He served under his original enlistment until April 4, 1863, and was discharged at St. Louis, Mo., and was then appointed captain of Company K, Mississippi Marine Brigade, by Edwin H. Stanton, then Secretary of War. He served in this capacity until May, 1874, when he was discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Upon his return home he went to farming, coming to Harrison County in 1876. Politically Mr. Dakan is a Republican, "first, last and all the time." He was married March 29, 1868, to Adaline Lincoln, daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Kay) Lincoln, natives of Ohio, who had seven children. Mr. and Mrs. Dakan are the parents of four children - William L., born April 29, 1869; Nellie A., born December 22, 1870; Harry L., July 22, 1874 and Pearl, September 27, 1885." From "1915 History or Harrison County" by Charles Hunt and Will L. Clark, page 382, comes the statement that Lehigh Dakan of section 17, came to Harrison County in 1876. He was a civil war soldier from Ohio. From Obituary from Missouri Valley Times, 18 Feb 1909 " Lee Dakan died at his home in Logan last night, aged about 68 years. The deceased was a Civil war vereran and served with distinction. He had been a resident of Harrison County for the past 30 years. The funeral will be held in Logan on Thursday at 2:00 pm by the members of the D. A. R.13,14 |
