| Note* | He was a Bachelor. Hiram homesteaded near Devils Head, Colorado. Dakan Mountain is named for him. Letha Marie Shull Mowry, 417 S. Walnut, Maryville, Mo, 64468-2464 has his date of birth as 1847, Missouri. Also says he lived in Freemont County, Colorado. From the 1880 Colorado Census Index from genealogylibrary.com on October 31, 1999 comes the following information Name State County Place Page Year Dakan, Hiram CO Park Co. 4th Precinct 201 1880 Also on the same page in Park County is George Dakan. According to the Application for Letters of Administration for the estate of John Dakan, Hiram lived in Freemont County, Colorado in 1876 when his father died. |

| Note* | Went to California in 1849 during the gold rush and was never heard from again. This was according to a letter from Uncle Perry. I (David O. Dakan) wonder if this is true because of an inscription on a tombstone at the Maysville Missouri, cemetery which reads "John W. son of H. & J. Dakan died Oct 1, 1853 age 10 mo. and 20 days." The only parents with the correct initials of H. and J. are Hiram and his wife Jane. If this boy was born the 12 Dec 1852 in Missouri, Hiram had to have been in Missouri or the east somewhere as late as March 1852. Either he went to California later than 1849 or John W. was not his son. 4 |

| Note* | The only thing we know about this fellow is he is listed in the 1820 Federal Census for Ohio County, Virginia on page 16, Line 35. The same census lists a William Dakin and a John Dakin in the same page which means they were neighbors. The census spelled his name as Jacobi Dakin. Jacobi Dakin was 26 to 45 years of age (b. 1775 - 1794) and had only one other person in his household with him and she was a female age 26 to 45 (b. 1775 - 1794). I assume she was his wife. Jacob Dakan (Notice the spelling) was listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Ohio County, Virginia on page 211 as having two males 0 - 5 years (b. 1825 - 1830), 2 males 5 -10 years (b. 1825 - 1830), one male 10 - 15 years (b 1815 - 1820) and one male 30 - 40 years (b. 1790 - 1800) and one female 10 -15 years (b. 1815 - 1820) and one female 20 - 30 years (b. 1800 - 1810). Presumably the oldest male is Jacob and the oldest female is his wife. I (David O. Dakan) have chosen as his most logical birth date as about 1794. This date provides a fit for the two pieces of census information I have. Both Donald C. Dakan and Rosie Howell have fixed his date of birth as about 1799, but since I do not know their source for this information, I have chosen the date of about 1794 until better information is found. Information from the e-mail from Stacy Dakan, 8 Apr 2002 has a request for information from Deborah Franklin requesting information about Jacob Dakan who went to Texas in 1840. This is probably the same person. It says "I am interested in finding any information on the Jacob Dakan family before he came to Texas in 1840. In 1820 he was in Greene County, Penn. Also in Ohio County, Va in 1830. His children were Narsey, born in 1823 in Va, Perry, born in 1821 in Penn; Ebinezer, born in 1823 in Va; Blake born in 1824 in Va; maybe John, Isiah and William. I would appreciate any information you may have. Also, would anyone know where Jacob's son, Ebinezer, would have been killed in Texas, and where he may be buried. He died March 9, 1864. Ebinezer came to Texas with his father Jacob in 1840. Please feel free to e-mail me about the above information. Thank you.5,2 |

They were both born in New York state. John Daken shows up on the Cumberlain Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania Tax Records for 1819. The only thing the records show us is that he is married. Two people with the names of William and John are listed on the same page in the 1820 Census of Ohio County, Virginia. William Daken in 1820 had living with him two males 0-10 years (b. 1810 - 1820), one male 26 - 45 years (b. 1775 - 1794) and two males 45 & up (b. Before 1775). William Dakin also had 3 females 0-10 years (b. 1810 - 1829), 3 females 16-26 years (b. 1794 - 1804), and one female 45 & up (b. Before 1775). John Dakin in the 1820 census described above had one male 26 - 45 years (b. 1775 - 1794) who was presumably John himself and 2 females 0 - 10 years (b. 1810 - 1820) and one female 16 - 26 years (b. 1794 - 1804) who was presumably John's wife. Also there is Jacob Dakin. I (David Dakan) found this person on LDS microfilm 0337938 which was the 1830 census for Belmont County, Ohio. This person was on page 278 which indicated he and his household lived in Pultney Township, Belmont County, Ohio. The census spelled his last name as Daken and listed the following as living in the household. 1 male 5-10 yrs.., (b 1820-1825), 1 male 20-30 yrs, (b 1800-1810), 1 male 40-50 yrs, (b 1780-1790), 1 female under 5 yrs. (b 1825-1830), 1 female 5-10 yrs, (b 1820-1825), 2 females 10-15 yrs, (b 1815-1820), 1 female 30-40 yrs (b 1790-1800). John Dakan must be related to William Dakan (b 1785) since he was listed in the census on the same page implies they were neighbors. Since he is about the same age as William Dakan they must be either brothers or cousins. By the census information, John Dakan may have moved to Belmont County, Ohio between 1820 and 1830, if the persons above are the same person. From "History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties" by J. A. Caldwell, 1880, page 191 we have that "In 1845 Park & Dakan kept a store down on the corner of First and Washington streets" This could have been John Dakan.5 |

Karen Dakan has his date of birth as September 08, 1816. Note: We have no copy of this census and the information may be wrong. Source: (From Maxine Workman) 1860 Census, Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri.: Name, Place of Birth. (Age 47 at time of census.) Same census shows his first three sons were born in Ohio and the last four beginning with Hiram were born in Missouri. Since Hiram was 13 at the time of the 1960 census and Riely was 15 and born in Ohio, we may infer that the John Dakan family moved to Missouri at some time between 1845 and 1847. Records in the Nodaway County Court House indicate in November of 1870 John Dakan purchased the West half of the North East quarter, Section 17, Range 36, Township 63, Nodaway County, Missouri. He paid $150.00 for the land. Material from Letha Marie Shull Mowry indicates his date of birth as 1813. Probably a census record. Yet another date for his birth comes from Donald C. Dakan, who claims as his source, the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Lincoln Twp., Andrew County, Missouri. This source says he was born 14 March, 1816 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The letter from L. Cole of Amazonia, Missouri says his tombstone reads, "John Dakan; Died March 14, 1876; Age 61 years, 7 months, 26 days. This would seem to indicate his date of birth was 1814 on July 18. A handwritten note attached to the funeral notice for Rachael Cook (Dakan) says John Dakan died March 18, 1876. Aged 61 years, 7 months and 26 days. For additional information about the early Missouri Dakans' see Morris Levering. I (David Dakan) have a copy of the Application for Letters of Administration for the estate of John Dakan which was supplied to me by Arlene Vrooman.23,5 |

| Note* | "The Dakan Family" excerpted from "History of Wetzel County by Donald C. Dakan, says John Dakan settled in Wetzel County, West Virginia in 1879. John was the son of Thomas and Sarah Dakan who bought land in Monroe County, Ohio in the early 1830's and later moving to Williamsport, Morrow County, Ohio. In 1843 or sooner, John Dakan went back to Monroe County where he married Jane Mellott in 1843. John Dakan was the first postmaster of Wileyville, West Virginia. The post office was located in a meadow below his house. John had moved to Wileyville from Cameron, Ohio. John was a miller and grocer until the Civil War, when he enlisted in Company G of the 7th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He was a sergeant and was wounded in the battle of Antietam. After the war John was a carpenter and cabinet maker. The GenWeb from West Virginia has the following data from the Civil War muster roll for the 7th West Virginia. Dakin, John Co. G enlisted in Cameron. Ohio. This data was obtained online in April, 2000. According to a 13 August 1998 E-mail from Rosie Howell, who got the information from Daniel Melott, John and his son Ebenezer bought a large tract of land in Wileyville, West Virginia from William Melott. William Melott was the brother of John's wife Jane. According to Daniel Melott, William Melott was the original settler of Wileyville. The 1900 census for Proctor District, Wetzel County, West Virginia says his daughter Sarah as well as Sarah's mother and father (John Dakan) were born in Ohio. I (David O. Dakan) have placed John Dacon in the 1850 census as being this person. The information from Donald C. Dakan says John went back to Monroe County, Ohio and married Jane Mellott. John Dacon and three Mellott folks are on the same page of the 1850 census.13,14 |

| Note* | This John Dakan (3394) and John Dakan (202) may be the same person. If John Dakan (202) death is reported wrong he may have moved to Clinton County, Iowa where he is in the 1850 census. They were both born in New York state. Since the census spelled his name John Daken, I (David O. Dakan) am not sure he belongs with the Dakan family. He did live in the same neighborhood as Timothy B. Titcomb whose daughter married Neri P. Dakan, so there is a good chance John Daken is related in some way. He may be the same person as John Dakan (202) except his wife's name is different and his daughter Elizabeth is not born in the right time frame.2 |

Date of burial of February 1919 conflicts with his date of death of February 28, 1919. He was probably buried in March 1919. |
