| Note* | According to the family group sheet for Earl B. Dakan, Earl was in the Orphanage the same time as Etta Beatrice Stobbs Curry was in Council Bluffs, Pattawattamie County, Iowa. Both Earl Curry and his sister Edith mentioned a Mrs. Dakan in Medford, Oregon. Earl Curry thought Earl was adopted by Mrs. Dakan. Earl Dakan may be his adopted name and not his given name. The family group sheet says according to the 1920 census, Earl lived at 232 Okanogan Street, Wenatchee, Washington and was 30 years old working as a laborer at the Rail Road Depot. He was born in Iowa and his father and mother were both born in Indiana.1 |

| Note* | It could be that this fellow Ebenezer and William Dakan Sr. are the same person as Donald C. Dakan and I (David O. Dakan) are convinced Ebenezer's son Thomas Dakan b. 24 Oct 1783 and William Dakan's son William Jr. b. 1785 in New York state are in fact brothers. I have lenitively attached as children of this man the following individuals: Simon, who was born about 1775, Thomas who is the only child that Donald C. Dakan and I both agree really belongs as his child, William (1785), who I originally thought belongs to William Sr., John who appears with William in several census reports, and Jacob. His name spelled as Ebenezer Deacon is in the 1790 Census for Saratoga, Albany County, New York. He has in his household one male - 16 & over, four males under 16 and two females. His name spelled as Ebenezer Dakin shows up in the 1810 Census for Greene County, Pennsylvania. This census shows that Ebenezer's household consisted of the following individuals. One male 0-10 years (b. 1800 - 1810), three males 16 - 26 years (b. 1784 - 1794), and one male 45 & up (b. Before 1765). Also included in Ebenezers household was one female 0 -10 years (b. 1800 1810), three females 10 - 16 years (b. 1794 - 1800), one female 16 - 26 years (b. 1784 - 1794), one female 26 - 45 years (b. 1765 - 1784) and one female 45 & up (b. Before 1765). Information via Donald C. Dakan. Ebenezer Dakan according to the Greene County, Pennsylvania, Cumberland Township Tax Records for 1810 paid taxes on 121 acres, 60 cleared, 1 house and 1 barn. Also in the same township was Simon Dakan and William Dakan. A fellow by the name of Simon Dakon also lived in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1810. Green County, Pennsylvania was formed from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1796 according to the Greene County GenWeb site. From a copy of a letter from Uncle Percy's letter. "Grandfather William Dakan was in the war of 1812. Great Grandfather (Ebenezer Dakan, added by David O. Dakan for clarification) was in the Revolution of 1776, but yet have no record to prove it authentically. Grandfather William Dakan was twice married. The children became separated living in various parts of U.S.".3,4 |

| Note* | The 1850 Census for Morrow County, Ohio, Congress Township has the following information: Name Age Page Daken, Ebenezer 38 466b Daken, Chariet 28 466b Daken, Thomas 11 466b Daken, Lehi 9 466b Daken, Alexander 7 466b Daken, Sarah 5 466b Daken, Lafayette 3 466b Daken, Joseph 1 466b This census presents a question. The other information we have says that Ebenezer had the following children. 1) Martin (who died at 1, before this census); 2) Thomas who would have been 12 years old; 3) Lehigh who would have been 10 years; 4) Celia who would have been 9; 5) Alexander D. who would have been 7 years old; 6) Sarah A. who would have been 6; 7) Marcus Lafayette who would have been 3 years old; 8) Joseph who would have been 1 and; 9) Alfarita who was not born until 1855. Comparison of the census with the other information yields good agreement with the exception that Celia is missing. Could it be that she died before the 1850 census? Or could it be that she was living with some one else then? Possibly the parents of her mother, who died in 1844 when she was three. From Harris Grove Cemetery comes the following quote from tombstone there: "Husband Ebenezer Dakan; died Aug. 8, 1883; aged 70y, 11m, 25d" From the same stone on a different face are the words: "Wife Elizabeth Shaffer". I (David O. Dakan) do not think she is buried here as she died in 1844 which was a long time before Ebenezer came to Iowa. The 1850 census for Morrow County, Ohio shows Ebenezer was married to Charity by 1850 so it is likely the stone in Harrison County is simply a memorial of Elizabeth. The book "History of Harrison County, Iowa", 1891 says Ebenezer was married three times and had five children by his first marriage.13,14 |

We found Edith in the LDS individual search on the computer. Also on LDS microfiche #0962970 for burial records. She is buried in High Ridge Cemetery in Stanberry, MO. Marriage Information Source: Invitation to her 50th wedding anniversary to Oliver H. Demoss. The 50th anniversary was held 14 Nov 1947 at the Blue Room, Hotel Robidaux, St. Joseph, Missouri. Records at the Andrew County Court House in Savannah, Missouri indicate she lived in Bolckow, Andrew County Missouri when she was married. |

| Note* | He and his brother Byrum went to California in 1850 when they were 18 and 19 years old. They later came back to Morrow County, but returned to California in 1855. Elmer was a sheriff in California and active politically. He died in 1899 after being thrown from his horse. Evidence of Elmer and his wife Margaret's presence in Iowa comes in the form of a record of land transaction found in the Harrison County Court House, in that Elmer and his wife Margaret sold to Pearce Bone some land on December 17, 1857 for $450.00 Also that same day Elmer and Margaret sold to Edwin Ervin some land. Book D, page 287. From the book "Pioneer History of Harris Grove 1851 - 1861, page 33 comes the following article which I (David O. Dakan) believe belongs to Elmer even though the article says it is Elmore Dakan. "Elmore Dakan, with his family, came to Harris Grove in 1856 and lived about a year in the Wyman cabin in the SE1/4 SW1/4 Sec. 12, Lagrange Twp. Not liking Iowa and its winters, he trekked to California."5 |

| Note* | The LDS Web Site, Ancestral File says he was born in Ventura, Ventura County, California. The place of birth of Ventura is listed as questionable. He also shows up in the 1880 census for Gentry County, Missouri which says he was 4 years old. I doubt his parents moved from California to Missouri. The death certificate for both Elmer and his wife Emelia say they were in the real estate business. The death cerfificate for Emelia says she last worked at Dakan Reality which hints they owned a real estate agency.8 |

The family bible is very difficult to read so either date could be correct. According to the Tripp County, South Dakota - Federal Land Records, Ernest Dakan bought 160 acres in Tripp County, Twp 102N, Range 077W, in section 032 on May 22, 1911. The Federal Document ID number is 200038. This information was obtained from: http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/sd/tripp/land/trip-de.txt on August 11, 1999. |
