| Note* | Following is a quote from "Persia Centennial - 1883 - 1983", by the people of Persia, Iowa, page 63 - "Dakan Family - The only child of Harry Lee Dakan and Mamie Stoker, Almor Lee Dakan was born April 3, 1900, on a farm seven miles west of Persia. He attended school in the Persia area and helped his father on the farm. In 1916, Almor's mother suddenly died during child birth, leaving he and his father alone. Almor married Emma Christina Martens on December 10, 1919. Emma was the daughter of Hartwig Martens and Helene Trede, who immigrated from Germany in the 1880's and settled in the Persia vicinity. The first few years after he and Emma were married they lived in Persia and Almor owned and drove a stock truck. In the 1920's they moved to a farm west and north of Persia where Almor started farming. After the tornado, Almor and Emma helped raise three daughters of Emma's sister Marie, and then had a daughter of their own, Marceline. During the early 1930's the Dakans moved back to the farm where Almor was born. Two more children were born; a son, LaVerne, who died at birth and another daughter, DeLores. Almor continued farming until his death in August, 1961. Emma still lives on the farm, which has been in the Dakan family for over 100 years. She enjoys her yard and flowers, which have been her interest for years. Besides the two daughters, Emma has three granddaughters, Sherrie (Muxfeldt) Lee, Shelley (Barney) Johnson and Nancy Barney; and four great grandchildren: Ronnie, Rhoda and Jeff Lee and Mathew Johnson." From the death notices at Logan, Harrison County Court House, book 3 comes the fact that Almor was hospitalized in Council Bluffs for 39 days prior to his death. He died of inanition carcinoma of the colon and multiple metastasis, ie cancer of the colon.7 |

| Note* | Byrum and his brother Elmer went to California in 1850 possibly to go to the gold fields. He wound up a farmer in California and died at the age of 72. On Stacy and my trip to Harrison County in July 1998 we found good evidence he stopped in Iowa for a time as it appears he married Elizabeth Crab or Creal in Harrison County, Iowa in December of 1868. According to the Santa Cruz County, California - Index to Federal Land Records, Byram L. Dakan purchased land in Santa Cruz County, Twp. 0090S, Range 0020W, Section 033 on August 20, 1881. The Federal Land Document ID is 1538. This information was obtained from the WWW on August 11, 1999. |
